No way that will be satisfactory to most.?ÿ

I keep it in the office and cab, and worse yet, if it's really needed I keep it 'close' on extended hikes.

Usually, I try to go with flagging in the depth of winter.

In nearly fifty years of Surveying, I don't recall ever using spray paint!

But your mileage may vary. ??ÿ

We usually have time to thaw it out on the dash while driving to the site. HOWEVER, one must ensure the can does not overheat- I got real close a couple of weeks ago even though I rotated it several times.

But as far as preventing freezing or minimizing... nope. Maybe one could devise a block heater kind of arrangement using a container (with less wattage, of course)...

NEVER leave a can on the dashboard for any length of time. When I was a kid I saw a windshield blown completely out of a truck caused by a paint can that overheated and exploded.

We had one of our guys leave a can on the dash to warm up and forgot about it for a while. The can didn't blow up, but it slid up against his hat and hit the nozzle. Results were an orange dash and windshield. We were able to get the paint off the windshield....the dash, not so much.

Years ago out painting a line I tripped on a rock and dropped the spray paint can which hit a sharp-edged rock in the path -- it broke open and sort of exploded and shot orange paint all over me and my face and my glasses. We knocked off and went back to the office where the boss's wife was doing some paperwork. When I walked in covered in orange paint she burst into hysterical teary laughter -- I remember her face from that moment vividly as she was sort of a stick-in-the-mud and it was the only time I ever saw her smile. I do hold onto the paint can more tightly now.

Oh my. You will need to breakout the sealskin and mukluks for an ice apocalypse like that, Commander Peary.?ÿ ??ÿ

Seriously - Once paint gets frozen the "fizz" is usually gone when it thaws, rendering it useless.?ÿ Not a big problem here in the PNW but it does happen. So if it's really cold enough to freeze it where you are I suggest you carry the bare minimum supply for the day with you and keep it inside the cab. But not on the dash.

I keep a case of paint in the covered and locked bed of my truck.?ÿ I usually have my "current" can in the door well.?ÿ I was?ÿworking yesterday and my "cab" can ran out.?ÿ I grabbed a can from the back and gave it a couple of good shakes and moved on about my day with the new can working fine.?ÿ

The paint had stayed in the single digits for almost a week. It didn't get above 32F except for a few hours yesterday afternoon.?ÿ The half of a liter bottle of Eureka Water that I removed from the truck bed yesterday morning was still frozen solid; a testament to the fact everything back there was frozen solid.

I guess the "paint gods" just smiled on me. ??ÿ

At least it was orange.?ÿ ?ÿMy episode was yesterday.?ÿ ?ÿStaking property corners and had to cross the fence to set a rebar.?ÿ ?ÿPulled out the paint and need supplies.?ÿ Tossed the hammer, rebar, cap over the fence then the paint can.?ÿ ?ÿPerfectly landed on the hammer and heard a huge hissing sound and PINK paint everywhere.?ÿ ?ÿHappy because I didn't get covered.?ÿ ?ÿCrossed the fence and checked the damage.?ÿ ?ÿLittle bit on the hammer and the rest on the ground.?ÿ Can was done hissing so I picked it up to move it out of the way and there was just a tad more to escape and of course it shot all over my boot and pants.?ÿ D@MN IT!!!!?ÿ Ugh.....

Funny paint story:

I once spent the best part of a morning walking a mile of highway with several cans of paint to "refresh" our centerline stationing nails every 50'...complete with numbering the stations.?ÿ I spent lunch at a?ÿtruck stop down the road that had good fried chicken and a warm bathroom.?ÿ When I paid the cashier lady told me she 'loved' the pink of my fingernail polish.?ÿ It seems my index "trigger finger" nail was stained with paint that I wasn't able to remove by washing.

I told her I had a lot of it in the truck...but the trouble was it came in a spray can without a brush.... ??ÿ

I nearly always have a pink fingernail and boot. ?ÿLast summer right after I got my new truck, I opened the tailgate and started getting stuff out. Had about a half can of pink paint in a can I'd stuck in my tool pouch, and when I dragged it out the can rolled off the tailgate and exploded. ?ÿPainted half the new silver tailgate and chrome bumper. ?ÿLuckily I had a roll of paper towels and since the finish was newly waxed it wiped right off. ?ÿCould have been a disaster.
