Unfortunately, it's paywalled. Can you share the gist of it with us?

Yes. Three year old article featuring Kent McMillan and property history and research.

It's a small pain, but if you hit the cancel X in the paywall, then do the back button, the text is restored. A few repeats and the paywall gives up.

I used to sneak into movies when I was younger.

Right now I believe he's recovering from heart surgery.  He's somewhat active on Facebook.

Dude, I don't see a Cancel X at the paywall. And, if you think I'm gonna give somebody 25 cents for three months of articles about Houston, you have another thing coming. Is this a tariff?

I was not hit by the paywall. It just didn’t get me. Great read for sure.

Dude, do you see the big paywall that covers the text? Now up in the upper right and corner of that graphic is an X.

See, clicking on that cancels the graphic. It's new technology, maybe only 30 years old. Click on the X, click on the back button in the browser and you can read the article..

Repeat as needed until the paywall quits popping up.

Oh my!! Another story about Texas surveys. After all those comments about the superiority of Texas surveying, how all of us PLSSers were unwashed bumkins.

I didn't get a paywall notice, the article loaded without any reference to one.

The site didn't like my ad-blocker in Firefox, so I opened it in Chrome. No paywall. Just had to scroll down below the big picture of Adam's Food Mkt.

Seems odd to me that the city has any authority to dictate to the state-licensed surveyors how to do their work.

It will be interesting to see how this issue plays out.  It appears that the City of Houston created the issues but doesn't want to fix them.

RE: the paywall, really just a subscription request, I had no issue getting right past it to read several articles.  Running Chrome with an ad blocker.

I've been involved with similar issues. They can be fixed, but it gets complex. One I did dragged on and on, all the stake holders had to agree to a reconfiguration. It works, but it's not easy. The last one we did ended up being a Cleark's Plat. Fun times. It's doable; you've got to get your mind prepared for it.

I know the he in the title is referring to Kent, but reading that article gave me a flashback to another name. I worked with Bill Merten for a few years back in the 80s and 90s. He is a great surveyor and one of the smartest people I've ever met. Haven't seen him in 30 years but glad he's still chugging along.

Bill is the only LSLS I've ever known. It's funny that I did some poking around and I found some posts on here where Kent was belittling those with an LSLS. He obviously did not know Bill. I've never met Kent and probably never will, but I have no doubt that Bill could match or exceed anything Kent ever did. Seems like the roster for LSLS is diminishing also. Current roster has 58 of them still practicing.

Other thoughts: I don't think I ever worked in the First Ward, so I am not familiar with any of the issues there. I can remember working projects in the Second, Third, and Fourth Wards, but not the First. Also, the article mentions the City Surveyor not being available for comment. It's possible things have changed since I left Houston, but that used to be pretty much a ceremonial job for the longest time. I don't know if being a registered surveyor is even a requirement. The city surveyors I can recall used to use the office as a place to run their small private firms since there were really not any official duties to take up their time.

The neighbourhood was fine until the surveyor showed up...

If an owner has been occupying a property for decades with no disputes, that's where the real boundary is, not some imaginary lines on a map. Boundaries don't exist without people, they are a social construct, as tired as that phrasing is, but it's the best descriptor. If two neighbours agree on where the boundary is, then that's where it is, end of story.

What are the adverse possession rules in Texas?

I know the little guy under the NEHI sign is Kent because he insists all surveyors should have a handy stepladder available to get over two-wire barb wire fences without damaging the fence.

@holy-cow

When it comes to "getting over barb-wire fences", damaging the fence is the least of my worries! 😬

It's GREAT to see you posting again! 👍

Bro - using Chrome anyway, for me, it's not an X, it's a "Back Home" in the upper right of the little box that pops up asking for a quarter.  Hitting that closes it, then hitting the back button returns you to Houston, but the gimme box pops right back up.  And it continued to for at least a dozen tries from my PC until I gave up.

Take a breath. You're not always right when you're blind to another's' perspective.

Thanks, Boss, for having my back.

As I have aged, I seem to have lost the TED DURA DURA gene. Might have been worth a tussle back in the day of TED.

Today? Meh.

I was just reporting what I saw on my screen.

lol.

I'm a little 'attrick' myself so it's still possible we're just completely missing the obvious.  Still enjoying the bliss, though, ignorant or not.  🙂
