Is anyone using Carlson with intellicad 8.1? Is it stable? How do you like it? Also, given a choice between Carlson Survey and Carlson Civil Suite (which includes Survey) which would you opt for assuming money is not an issue? Thanks.

Bob

I am going all in on Monday with my new laptop with Carlson Survey 2016 with intellicad 8.1. I am looking forward to leaving Autodesk waving goodbye in my rear view mirror.

Jump in with me and we will swim together.

I watched a couple webinars recently that helped to put me at ease. You might be able to find them on YT.

Bob

I like it much better than the previous versions. I noticed images are handled much better too.

Brad, I watched a few of the videos as well. It looks like it should do everything I need, but I'm a little worried about stability. Nothing is quite so irritating as a cad platform that crashes all the time. Like you I'm really tired of Autodesk (may they rot in....) and their price gouging schemes and utter lack of customer service. I'm also not a fan of C3D, which by my calculations I have already sunk over $10k (and that figure does not include man hours) into that I will never recover.

The more I learned C3D, the more I realized how un-user-friendly it really is. It requires a ridiculous level of customization and automation and at the end of the day forces one to adjust your work flows to fit the software. I've spent years refining these workflows into an efficient system, with C3D I must now "reinvent the wheel" all over again just so Autodesk can maintain an edge on other software developers (like Carlson).

I've been using Carlson with Intellicad since 2008. It gets better with every upgrade and I've been using it so long I don't even know what benefits having Autodesk even provides. When I hear complaints, I'm over here like hmmm, I don't have any idea what you're talking about, but that's because I've never had the benefit (or hindrance) of using it. If $ is no issue I'd go with Civil Suite though. There are a few options here and there that I wish I had with the Survey package.

The 8.1 intellicad is quite stable. Since it has been on my PC I feel like it has only crashed once.
They really improved on this last upgrade. Carlson Survwy is good too, but it has always been good. It's been intellicad that held it back. Not anymore.

I went in head first into carlson. Got the Intellicad 8.1 carlson 16.

Can only say that it is amazing and why I didn't get it early.

Only hiccups when I first started was the usb dongle issue as the drivers my dealer gave me were wrong and went merry go around with the dealer until I googled it up.

For the field 2 finish, it was much better than my older software as it allows more customization.

DTM and contouring is easier as when you set your f2f properly, it should automatically detect the breaklines. (Still trying to figure this one out, but carlson support is very responsive, don't be afraid to drop an email)

So far for my work, carlson on intellicad have not crashed on me . However coming from an autocad background, I am still not used to drafting on it. So my workflows goes like this. For processing of data and all, I use carlson and Intellicad. For the finishing touches and clean up I use Vanilla Autocad.

Have fun with Carlson, am amazed by the quality of the product.

We migrated over about 6 months ago. I do like the software a lot on the other hand I have had minor intellicad stability issues where specific commands cause a crash. It seems to change from update to update now its draw standard item and trying to manually delete a layer in this one. I would recommend a 5 minute auto save. That said I do think you get a lot of bang for the buck with Carlson and am really happy with the software.

I've been using Carlson and Intellicad since the 2011 version. At first it was difficult getting used to the slightly different commands but after a while I became very productive with it. It is much faster loading than AutoCAD.

I have been using ICad on my home laptop. Thumbs up and I am looking at starting a transition at work soon.

As previous responses, Intellicad 8.1 is great improvement over earlier versions.
Crashes when working on archived LLD drawings. Know your recovery settings! Rare crash w native Intellicad dwg.
Carlson SW treats their customers well. Good product and exceptional attitude. You'll be happy.

How powerful of a computer are you all running this on? It looks like almost any new computer would work fine based on the system requirements from their website.

Anyone having any problems when trying to restore a saved layer state into a new drawing? I keep getting this "Unable to load C:PROGRAM FILESCARLSON2016_ICAD8_X64LSPRANGE8_x64.DLL". It has worked fine until today??

Well... it is Wednesday. Started in earnest really yesterday. I am not sure if it is due to the buggy icad software program OR the fact that my dropbox is syncing non-stop (I will try to remember to pause the DB sync while I need to crank out these dwg deadlines this week) OR a little of both, but icad has been hanging up with the most simple commands today. I bought the bestest and baaddest Dell Precision ($4k) laptop, so I would hope that the computer is not the trouble, but maybe the first week with a new computer settings, etc...

Oh yeah, by the way does anybody have a romant.shx file they would please share with me?

Thanks for listening.

Also, what is a Host Process for Windows Services?

Pausing dropbox, easier said than done. But damn, with 32GB RAM, this should not be the issue, right?

Brad,

Try this font.

This site would not allow the upload of an shx file. Just remove the .txt extension after download.

Your dropbox is taking alot of memory. Sometimes it could not be the RAM issue but the processor if the programme is not optimized to use multi core processors. Can disable it to run on start up and later sync when you need it.

Yes, I agree. A friend of mine told me to just let drop box do its initial syncing (even if it takes a few days). It started syncing 248,000 files, now it is down to 168,000. So I have been barely keeping up with deadlines using my old laptop in the meantime, while my new laptop is syncing smoothly now, so far so good.

I am still looking forward to a successful run with Carlson 2016 Intellicad 8.1 once my new laptop has all of its Windows Updates and Drop Box is synced, etc.

Thanks, sireath, for confirming what my friend told me, that is very helpful.
