Do you mean the ƒ??Surveyor of the weekƒ? thing from back in the day or an actual Surveyorƒ??s hall of fame.

I'll second...

The tradition was started by Eugene Kooper on Dec. 05, 2004.

The purpose as written by Ian Wilson:
Gene's purpose in creating the SOTW was not really as an accolade but as a vehicle to 'out' surveyors.

It was Gene's intention to focus a spotlight on a particular land surveyor each week.
The surveyor would post a bio and a photo so we could all get to know who we are chatting with.

Groan! Thanks Nate! But your post is, as usual, fun!

I actually had in mind a real (could be virtual) Surveyors Hall of Fame. You know, not for us plain folks dirt surveyors, nor even the type that have the distance perfectly down from their desk to the coffee machine to the .001' and tend to run state organizations, but real, sometimes famous, surveyors that were giants in our profession. You know, like Andrew Ellicott, William Austin Burt, Thomas Jefferson, David Rittenhouse, etc. Not just because they were otherwise famous, but because they were at the top and leaders of our profession.

Nadeau Land Surveys has a decent page on their website, but I haven't been able to find much else.

This is a great idea. I'd be happy to create a Surveyors Hall of Fame here at RPLS Today. All I need are suggestions, links, and/or write-ups for appropriate candidates. I can probably come up with some myself, but it would be better served as a community effort, IMHO.

I think the list Nadeau has put together is really good, but I might suggest that we pinpoint a few "newer" candidates. For example, I would think that Mark Deal should be on that list.

Thanks guys, for the enthusiasm and great ideas!

Will RPLS let us do something like that, at least to get it started?

I wonder how the NSPS would view this?

Would they be willing to take it over at some point?

I would suggest that we have the Surveyors Hall of Fame AND an SOTW or SOTM. It was a community effort before and could remain as such. But I'd be happy to host it here and even put some effort into showcase each person as you select them and maintain the list.

Since the previous bios and other info seems to be gone forever, I might also recommend that we start over for the sake of our own records here. But again, I'm wide open to the community's decision.

I was going to nominate myself as the inaugural "Hall Of Fame Surveyor", but as it just so happens, I'm up for the Nobel Prize for Surveying as well. Does it come with a cash prize? Walmart Gift Card? Trophy??ÿ

Seriously, this is a good idea, and I hope we can bring back the "Surveyor Of The Week". I enjoyed reading everyone's bio. There are some interesting folks out there with some really interesting life stories.?ÿ

Dale, I believe the prize is a single can of coke and some pop rocks.

I used to host the list on my website but I don't think the data is still there. I will look for it though.

Yeah. The SOTW and Pictures folders are still there, but the data is not. Whoever was maintaining the list deleted the material when it was moved to a new server.

Found the list.?ÿ http://www.rplsfaq.com/sotwlist.html

Apparently the data was kept on the RPLS.com server.
