Passkeys and 2-step verification are now on RPLS.com

Security is paramount at RPLS.com. Passkeys and 2-step verification are now available, and we highly recommend setting up at least 1.

You can now sign in to RPLS.com with a passkey, and you can add 2-step verification to your account. Both are optional, each takes a couple of minutes to set up, and both make it much harder for anyone else to get into your account.

Security is paramount at RPLS.com. We highly recommend that you set up at least 1 of these methods, preferably both.

Why it matters

Your RPLS.com account is your name, your posts, your listings, and your membership. The most common way an account gets taken over is a password that leaked from some other website and was reused here. With either of these turned on, a stolen password isn’t enough.

Surveyors already know the idea. You don’t trust a single measurement, and a second check catches what the first one misses.

Passkeys: no password at all

A passkey swaps your password for something you already have with you: your fingerprint, your face, or your device PIN. There’s nothing to type, remember, or steal. A passkey also only works on the real RPLS.com, so a look-alike page can’t trick you into handing it over.

Once it’s set up, use the “Sign in with a passkey” button on the login page. It works with Touch ID, Windows Hello, most password managers, and hardware security keys.

2-step verification: a second check

If you’d rather keep your password, add a second step. With an authenticator app on your phone, signing in becomes your password plus a short code from the app. Someone who has your password but not your phone is stuck at the door. Any authenticator app will work.

Do both if you can

You can set up a passkey and 2-step verification on the same account, and I’d suggest you do. Then you’re covered even when you’re on a device where your passkey isn’t available. If you only want to use 1, make it the passkey. It’s the easiest and the strongest.

How to set up

You’ll be offered both when you sign in. Already signed in? Go to My Account, open the Security & Password tab, and click “Set up a passkey or authenticator app.” Here’s the direct link: https://rpls.com/account/security/

During setup you’ll be provided with recovery keys. Save them somewhere safe, like a password manager or a printed copy stored in a secure location. If you lose your device, you’ll need them to get back in.

If you ever need to remove or change a passkey, or turn off the authenticator app, contact support.

Other ways to sign in

A quick reminder that you have options besides typing a password:

  • Magic login. Enter your email and a message will be sent to you with a sign-in link. Click it and you’re in.
  • Facebook or Google. Use the account you already have with one click.
  • Forgot your password? Click “Lost your password?” on the login page and you’ll get an email to choose a new one.

If you’ve lost access to your email address, use the contact form at https://rpls.com/contact/. If you’re still signed in somewhere, the Support tab in My Account lets you submit a ticket instead.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes. If you hit a snag, let me know.

Happy traversing,
