A Solar Strom is scheduled to hit soon, sounds like tomorrow. It's rated as a G3 level event, the northern lights show last month was rated a G4. Probably will leave our GPS equipment largely unaffected, but it's something to be aware of.

I'm on day three of hurricane force winds. Roofs ripped off, trees down everywhere, power mostly out for most of the weekend with temps hanging between 10-15 degrees, forget the wind chill.  A solar storm that would bugger up GPS would just be icing on the cake. In Florida, it would be national news, in Alaska, just another day in paradise. Had a similar storm a few years ago that lasted six days. No power for five of those. I bought a generator and installed a transfer switch on my house, along with a full wood shed, lot of people a whole lot worse off than me.

An "atmospheric river" is hitting Portland this week. About 3 inches of rain over the next 48 hours and about 6 inches over the next week. Not exactly a national emergency or anything, but a good chance to catch up on office work.

Looking for 60mph winds tomorrow, rain and snow; getting field work done today. The space stuff isn't going to mess with us, we will be inside.

@john-putnam Yep. Winds finally died out this morning after four days. Trees are littered with insulation and twisted roofing metal. Drove by the airport on Saturday, probably shouldn't have, it was a rather painful sight. Somebody's PA-11, or what's left of it.

Weather here in eastern Iowa has been routine this week - some snow, the plows go, and life goes on. Back on Nov 29 was our first serious snow and so far the biggest of all, which made travel problematic.

When I am clearing the driveway, my mantra is "This is why I don't have scorpions, copperheads, alligators, or kudzu to worry about."

I'm the past I never saw the appeal of Florida... but now that I'm 62 and running a company that has offices in Orlando and West Palm that I occasionally travel to it's starting to make sense.  At least this time of year

@williwaw I'd say you're in the right place. Given climate change Florida is going to be underwater shortly and Wasilla will be positively tropical

@jimcox Not in my life time any way. We're back to getting blasted by 80 mph gusts all weekend and today. It positively sucks, or blows, whichever way the wind goes. Sounded like a freight train all night, makes the whole house shudder. Florida sounds really good right now.

@williwaw Cheer up, you could be in Dawson City.  The high temps are in the lower -40 C.  Those numbers are not helping me convince my wife to pack it in and move there.

On the home front, it looks like another day with +60 mm of rain on Thursday here in Forest Grove.

Red Flag warnings are everywhere it seems.  High winds taking down  power lines which start fires that move as fast as the wind towards anything and everything.  They even emptied a school in Hutchinson, Kansas today due to a runaway fire.  The school is in the middle of the city. One fire in eastern Colorado is racing towards Kansas and has grown from 14,000 acres to more than 40,000 acres at last report.  That is short grass country with few trees.

Portions of I-70 in Colorado and Kansas have been closed due to semi-trucks and vans being toppled.
