I need to reset a PK nail on a busy road.?ÿ This is a very rural area and property lines extend to the CL of state roads in this county.?ÿ ?ÿYes, it is both a rural AND a very busy road.?ÿ There is a Manufacturing company nearby and this is the main thoroughfare for the area.?ÿ ?ÿ I've picked up the other road property corners via 2 sessions of VRS @ 180 epochs at least 4 hours apart to obtain the 95% confidence level.?ÿ The problem is, I about died doing it.?ÿ People either see you and don't care as they fly by at 65 mph on a 2 lane road ... Or they don't see you because they're too busy looking at their phones.?ÿ I've been trying to run the GNSS as much as possible, but is it time for me to just use the TS??ÿ ?ÿEither way, my son or I are going to find ourselves in the middle of this dangerous road.?ÿ ?ÿThoughts?
?ÿ
Set reference point(s) in a safe location and document it as such?
Suggest early Sunday morning.?ÿ
It has only been the last 70 years or so that it came into fashion for road takings to be done in fee, so I don't see the necessity of monumenting out in the centerline. Why wouldn't you set your "lot corner" marker where the sideline intersects the road ROW as a matter of course?
You may also try a brief lane closure via local contractor,?ÿ police agency or fire department.?ÿ
If possible set online witness corners at a convenient offset and label accordingly. ?????ÿ
Don??t go out there. ?ÿIt is not worth the safety risk.
As others said, set your witness corner at the right-of-way limits and label the true property corner as a "calculated point, no monument set due to heavy traffic volumes". No monument is worth dying for.
A centerline monument isn??t going to do the owner much good, go with an offset.
First off, if you're going to set something in the road have the decency to make it a gin spindle and not a cheap little magnail. Second, get there at 4am tomorrow, bring your shotgun and enjoy the opening of dove hunting after you get it done.
@leegreen this.?ÿ done a bunch of manhole inverts using this method.?ÿ problem being it's been a real window into just how rough everyone's saturday night was...

Why? It's not worth getting killed for.
- Offsets at the right of way line are more useful.?ÿ?ÿ
- It's not worth getting killed for.
- What's the difference if you set it and it pops out a week later, or if you just claim to have set it and it can't be found?
- If the client demands it, they will have to pay for the traffic control. A crew will come out and shut down a lane for you, have traffic alternate in the one remaining lane while you do your thing. Cost is surprisingly low, but still probably $1000 or more. Plus your hourly rates.
It's not worth getting killed for.?ÿ BTW - its a MAG nail, not a PK.?ÿ There is a difference and yes it is significant.?ÿ And if you are going to go to all this trouble at least set something more substantial - like an iron rod.
It's not worth getting killed for.
Setting things in the middle of the road is a regular way of life around here.?ÿ Now...........finding them is ten times harder once a new pavement overlay has occurred.?ÿ We recovered a monument located about 10 feet east of the center line of a US highway Monday afternoon.?ÿ It was an intersection, so the side road traffic had to stop anyway.?ÿ To the north there is a view of more than a half mile, so plenty of time to avoid them.?ÿ To the south, not so hot, maybe 600 feet to the hill top.?ÿ The spotter does a lot of listening as well as looking.
I just had this discussion.?ÿ Except, I uncovered a legit full box of PK nails in our gear closet, go figure. I might have to sell these as a long lost desirable artifact.

How do you know that for sure?
