Is there a better locator than a Schonstedt? Ours truck was broken in to and it was stolen last night.
Thanks,
LAS
NO.
Double No
Subsurface Instruments locators are more durable and have a more reliable battery connection. Some models are even fully submersible, but the waterproof ones have a somewhat muffled speaker sound. Compared to the classic Schonstedt, the audible signal is a little harder to interpret, but overall locating performance is good enough.
I'm not sure if Schonstedt is the very best, but nobody has ever regretted choosing one.
I have both Schonstedt & Subsurface detectors (from back when I had multiple crews). 20+ years on, I like them both. The Schony is currently in the truck but that is only because I can only use one at a time. I have used other brands without the same success. No matter what, get one with the display.
As I recall, Subsurface was founded by a bunch of Schonstedt engineers that left when the company changed hands.
I have used to pin flags in a pinch no sound but when they cross I usually find what i need. Schon is a good one. We had an attempted break in last couple weeks they were caught on the deer cams we have set up. It is getting bad for people stealing stuff.
Schondstedt is pretty reliable but I'm starting to hate how they're so worthless around fences. I picked up a Subsurface and I like it. A coworker bought a Hound Dog and I like that too. The hound dog seems to have a setting where it goes silent over a pin when near a fence and I'm a big fan of that.
@Strandly Around here some surveyors from the big city north of me seem to just cut fences. I have repaired a few in last month where they were looking. Bad thing is that white pvc pipe stacked right on top flagged and painted was not enough they had to cut all wires. They attempted to tie the barbed wire back with flagging. I have a new paddock I want to put in but am waiting to catch them so they can help. I was not a happy camper. After a few repairs i went up the line and re flagged all the pins hoping they will find them easier. Rule number 1 never mess with a mans roof rule number 2 don’t damage a fence holding cattle in. Rule 3 don’t go cutting ruts in hay fields and row crops or pasture. Its not that hard.
I have been a fan of Subsurface with screen for over 15 years. I had a Maggie Schonstedt and ended up selling it to a friend.
Thanks for the insights!
I ordered the Subsurface because of the screen graph and it is longer than the comparable Schonstedt, Most of us are relatively tall and don't like to bend over.
