I am setting at one the most beautiful beaches in the world with my family of 4 who I adore and all I can do is worry that something will happen at work this week that will need my attention immediately and I will not be able to respond fast enough and loose a client or a job. It is a terrible double edged sword of owning a small business. I have a good guy in the office looking out for things and a PLS buddy at the ready should I need him that I trust my life with, but I can't shake this feeling that I should be working. And the kicker is we are not even that busy right now. I know it is my own insecurities but this is how I feed my family. It is literally the second most important thing in my life behind my family because it enables my family to have the life we do.

Damn. I wish I drank. I am sure it will wear off after a couple of days.

Send some relaxing, peaceful vibes your old buddy Snoop's way if you have any to spare. I need to enjoy this time with the fam without this worry over my head.

You are making valuable memories for your kids. They will too soon be gone. Relax, enjoy the time and make it memorable for them. Don't let them catch you with that far away blank look on your face. "Mom, Dad's working again"! Our kids are gone and I would give almost anything to relive some of those trips with them.

Snoop,

That is the curse of running and owning your own business. I am in the same boat that you are. I feel guilty if I am not working.

I am learning that there is more to life than the business, but do feel the same way you do. My business is what pays the bills.

Take a few days and enjoy your family.

Jimmy

Alan, nailed it!!! Enjoy every fleeting moment of life because you never know when it will change unexpectedly, end abruptly or simply slip away slowly.;-)
Cheers

It's been said a lot of ways by a lot of people, including Jesus:

BE HERE NOW

Can't help with the not drinking part:-)

Yes, your Avatar is one of the few I love to hate.....;-)

But that won't keep me from sending a good vibe, your way.

Have a good vacation my friend...

Cheers,

Radar

People deserve a break from working, even if it means doing it without the family, as long as it recharges and renews your ability to be a good father and husband. Right?

Just spent a week away from the kids at the sand dunes, followed up by a weekend of hunting with both my kids, my dad and brother. Did I feel guilty at the dunes without the kids?? YES, will I make it up to them? I'll sure try. JRL

Wendell does the same thing, Snoop. I think a lot of men do when they are the main breadwinners in the family. Try to relax...frolic on the beach with your family...you got the office covered!! Enjoy your trip and take some pics for us! 🙂

Where are you, anyhow?? What beach that is?? 🙂

I am so glad that I am not the only one who feels this way if I am not working every waking moment.

For me that makes it even worse, worrying that a shot at a big project might come up while I'm gone.

That guilt is also called stress and you need to get rid of it. You don't need to drink, get a massage, try acupuncture or yoga. Believe me, all those therapies work if you let them and most of us would be better off using them. Clear your mind!

Question

Do you feel like this when you're deer hunting? If not, I'd say that it's nothing to worry about. If you do, then you need to unplug more often.

I feel your pain though. 🙂

.

I used to feel that way when I dealt directly with clients but I fired all my clients. Now I just work for a handful of contractors. Waaaay less stress and I can unplug the answering machine and take a month off in the summer.

I know it can be tough on you mentally but you are a survivor!

Lets see, you are on the beach and I am working.

A very common small business owners mindset. What gives you the drive to run and build your own business also is the same drive to keep pushing. But over time you'll learn that to be focused to make good decisions and to feel like working, you'll have to take a break and recharge. Learning to recharge is a learned skill. Once you master it, you'll have more energy to work more focused when you are working. Theres a time & place for everything. Time to sleep, eat, work, and time to relax. You'll be pleasantly surprised that you'll make more money when you start figuring out how to recharge. No human can work non-stop.
