Sign contract on Wednesday
Preconstruction & safety meeting on Thursday.?ÿ Informed all onsite staff has to have OSHA 10 within the last 18 months, all staff on site has to have a drug test within 72 hours, still don't have CAD files or PDF of approved plans, site specific PPE required, etc.
Then they ask, can you start Friday?
?ÿ
When you are in a state that has legalized marijuana it is darn near impossible to find field staff who can pass the drug test.?ÿ
@norman-oklahoma I have not found that to be a problem so far. The legalization of marijuana in Mass. is only a few years old, so maybe that will change.
We've had a number of clients in the marijuana production and dispensary industries over the past few years. I suspect the owners don't use their own product much, as they seem to be pretty savvy at business.
No problem. Which Friday because it won??t be this one.
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
@norman-oklahoma I have a project for a national engineering firm that is just providing staff augmentation documenting site conditions before new utility house connections are installed.?ÿ Very low budget (client set it before they came to me).?ÿ The Venn diagram of people who will work for $22 +/- an hour, are willing to drive around the DC suburbs all day, and don't p**s hot has a very small overlapping area
@williwaw On the one hand, tell them what you really think; on the other remember that they are a nationwide utility grade solar development to EPC firm and bite your tongue.?ÿ ?ÿ
Simple answer, NO!!
Seems like staking from "100% For Construction" plans is a rare luxury these days.?ÿ Sometimes it's Clearing Limits from 35% Plans, Excavation from 65% Plans, and limping half-way through the project on 95% Plans, with a faint promise of 100% Plans any day now.?ÿ People who know about these things tell me it's more efficient and saves the Owner time and money.?ÿ?ÿ
?ÿ
Then they ask, can you start Friday?
Which means they respect and have confidence in you and your organization.
And you will start Friday, won't you? ?????ÿ
Send one employee out on Friday sort of driving around the general area of the project.?ÿ You have started.
You can always just start billing for Friday, especially if doing what the blessed bovine says.
And they want you at their Monday meeting for an 1-1/2hr for the next two years and you only bid on 10k of staking.?ÿ
I simply turn down all requests for construction surveying, it's too bad, there was a time when I enjoyed it.?ÿ
Those projects suck, but I get it, sometimes we're all just along for the ride and got to make the best of it. Usually come with some crazy indemnification clauses and bonkers contract language that makes you wonder who works for these guys. I hate how you always get less than 24 hrs to go from receiving the CAD drawing to hair on fire 'We need stakes right now or there'll be 94 guys standing around with their hands in their pockets tomorrow!! Six excavators idling!!'?ÿ ?ÿ

Ugh, that happens to us way more than it should.
Just as annoying is the in-house policy of not calculating anything until we get the request, which of course is the afternoon before wood has to be in the ground.
If we have stamped & approved plans, I will start calculating everything that we are contracted to stake and storing points, alignments, DXFs, surfaces, etc. in the cloud. Even if all we have been asked to do at that point is go set control and flag clearing limits.
The correct answer is ??Friday? But we??ve already started.???ÿ
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
Yes we can start on Friday with people who meet 10% of your requirements.
We can not work miracles or read minds so we won??t be setting stakes if we don??t have plans in hand.
And if you got ones that can pass the test you better pay him well especially if you have experience because they're worth gold
That description unless they're laborers just carrying bags of cements around good luck I wouldn't even consider working as an eye person in Washington DC for less than 30 bucks an hour
I'd respond with a few questions of my own by email and ask what they wanted me to do on Friday.?ÿ My thought is your crew may be the only ones on site for a few days.?ÿ Do they need the OSHA 10 if construction hasn't started? The drug test shouldn't be a problem.?ÿ Can you start setting control if you have a set of plans by Thursday?
