With technology changing rapidly I predict or would like my future surveying instrument to have the following . Non optics meaning it knows where I am with out pointing or tracking , like the spinning laser levels . Self leveling and able to do HI . Built in GPS , Built in 360 cameras , Built in laser scanners . Some of these are already possible.

Survey pole wishes , built in gps rover + radio , power battery storage, automatic rod height , wifi connection , blue tooth connection . With todays technology this pole can be built .

that pole sounds cool, but as long as they still have "dumb" poles for those crew members who don't "appreciate" the techie world...

Would that pole also be effective at retarding retarded dog attacks?

It would have to have a really good built-in camera to match existing optics. Namely for when sighting things for reflectorless.

I would like to see miniaturization as much as anything else. I could envision this instrument not being much larger than a soda can before too long. I think we could also do away with one of the standard uprights. Sort of an eccentric configuration.

Yeh, Just Think About It!

A billion point file for a 4 corner survey.

The right information may be impossible to pull out of the morass.

> Survey pole wishes ....
One which detects, and corrects for, plumb - or lack thereof. I understand that these already exist.

That's me.
The camera was still being made during my training. 2 scanners, 33 lasers, GPS, IMU, 7 camera 360 x 330 FOV, HD video.

Cannot see through leaves!

reminds me of a post surgery drug induced haze where I imagined a super software that was smart enough to make sense out of a coded point cloud without needing any sort of "line coding" from the surveyor.... it was trippy!

Some old band called Led Zepplin wrote a song about that in 1971:

[flash width=420 height=315]//www.youtube.com/v/CPSkNFODVRE?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0[/flash]

Then that other band Aerosmith had a similar solution:

I'm surprised one of the ideas wasn't a "smart rod" so we never have to even leave the truck. My stupid phone is smart, and unfortunately smarter than me. How about droids? We can run them from the office.... hmmmmmm

Ah, technology is a powerful god...using humidity to keep things crisp. I may just start storing my beer in the oven to keep it cool..

I would settle for a robot that doesn't lose tracking, and a data collector that doesn't lock up multiple times a day.
