What do you tell a client that want's this kind of survey?
I would like to perform a survey of the 100?? property line on one side of my home, (South side) in order to determine where to plant a hedge in the front yard.
There's a little more to the email, but no address, other than @47.2928021,-122.5828522,12z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x549054827ce27d03:0x56cf4cd8359825d4!8m2!3d47.2887352!4d-122.5134478" target="true" rel="noopener">98407. This is old town, North Tacoma; probably platted before Statehood. It looks like she's wanting it done for as little as possible...
TIA
- We're a specialized firm, and that's not the type of work we usually do, but I can give you the names of a couple of good surveyors that could help you out.
- We have an eight week backlog right now, so we probably can't get out there within your timeframe, but I can give you the names of a couple of good surveyors that could help you out.
- $4,500
Tell her you will need to locate all of the corners in order to properly do the survey.?ÿ Then wait for the crickets.
Liar Liar (the Surveyor Sequel)
To be honest, ma'am, you could plant that hedge three or four times over for what a survey would cost you. I'd say just plant it where you want it. I wouldn't worry about it.
she needs to quit fighting with her neighbors, she can't afford it

I've told potential clients that I've lived in my house for twenty years now, it's a small 50' wide city lot, and my back fence is only 48.5' wide. ?ÿAnd I've never surveyed my lot because my neighbors watching my house when I'm on vacation, or making sure my dog doesn't get out, is worth a heck of a lot more than having an extra foot and a half of yard to mow. ?ÿ

So, Ma'am, how much do you suppose it will cost you if the neighbor claims your hedge as his/hers?
?ÿ
Please understand that when someone around here uses the term "hedge" they are referring to a tree. ?ÿSame as saying you want an oak, elm or mimosa in your front yard. ?ÿA line of bushes is simply a line of bushes, not a hedge.
?ÿ
If anyone wants a hedge I have plenty of them with trunk diameters ranging from one-quarter inch to five feet. ?ÿCome an' git 'em.
Just tell her the truth. To stake that line I have to do x,y, and z. The cost of that is approximately $.$$. That is likely more than what you were expecting. So while I am out there I could survey all the improvements to your lot for an additional $.$$. In the end you would have a complete survey of your property that could be used for future landscaping or home improvement planning and deaign. She??ll either bite or walk away. Either will be a win for you.?ÿ
Tell her doing a survey like that would be like her hairdresser only cutting the right side of her hair.
Snort.?ÿ
- Don't recommend this person to anyone unless they politely ask. That is not why they called you.?ÿ
- It is okay to decline; you don't need an excuse. Your gut will tell you when.?ÿ
- Don't give a $ amount for comparison sake unless you want the job.?ÿ
- Hedges around here are likely laurel, photinia or juniper. All the bane of a surveyor's (and neighbor) existence.
Nice lady lives in a fancy house that was red-tagged because she built a wall on County property called me last week because Brand X and Y said that I would be a cheaper option because I did the plat she was in. True I did the plat, but that was in 1991! And the plat monuments are clearly still in place. I gave her my fee to recover the lot corners which she exclaimed was more than the other two surveyors. I replied by asking if she thought Microsoft would give her a fee concession to recover her hard drive that crashed in 1992 and restore her Windows 3.1 because they were there before. She laughed and said that she would be renting a metal detector.?ÿ
I've said...in cases like this...when I explain that I just can't do PART of a job...but the client disagrees...
"Well?ÿ Mr./Mrs. X...what you are going to need then, is a lot more time, a lot more money...and ANOTHER SURVEYOR!" HA!
You mean your Realator didn't show you your line? This is going to cost extra.
I wouldn't bother going into too much explanation of what you have to do to stake the line.?ÿ?ÿ Just give them a fee, and if they question it then refer them to your enabling act.?ÿ?ÿ Here, I use 250 CMR, the Land Court Manual and then the town regulations.
Your client doesn't need to know how or what to survey, that's your job.

Sometimes I don't answer emails.

When my wife taught Kindergarten in Kansas, she wanted to get a bunch of Osage Orange fruit (hedge trees) for a class project.?ÿ Everybody thought she was nuts.?ÿ If my memory serves me I think I did help her get some.?ÿ ?ÿI told her not to keep them around to long.
The fruit or "hedge balls" or "hedge apples" can be fun to toss around, especially at co-workers. ?ÿBut, if poked or scratched, they begin to ooze that Elmer's Glue-like milky substance that is tough to get off your hands. ?ÿThe really bad thing is that they come in a variety of diameters such that they can seal off the windpipe of bovines who think they look like tasty chew toys. ?ÿA frequently fatal circumstance.
