We recently bought a new Ranger.?ÿ It has Spectra Precision nameplate on it.?ÿ I know Trimble sells an identical or similar unit.?ÿ Ours has TDS software on it.?ÿ We had to return the first unit we got.?ÿ It wouldn't turn on sometimes, would lock up, had trouble starting the base GPS unit, and before we returned it, it wouldn't download through the download port, we had to use a thumb drive on the USB port.?ÿ It was also slow at times.?ÿ For example, when we first got it the offset screen would take 45 seconds to load, but that seemed to "fix" itself and got better.
They took it back and sent us a loaner until we can get another new one.?ÿ Generally the loaner seems better but it also seems slow in certain screens.?ÿ For example taking longer than normal to get into the stakeout points screen and taking longer than normal to store a point.
Anybody have any problems with these units??ÿ I'm worried even when we get another new one we still won't be happy with it.?ÿ Overall I'm happy with the unit other than the glitches.
"New Ranger" is an inaccurate term. It may be new manufacture, but it isn't new technology. It was newish about 10 years ago. And since it has the SP nameplate I assume it is running Survey Pro. Another piece of?ÿ c.1999 technology.?ÿ Really, it's a DOS program with windows overlay. The combination is dead a$$ slow.?ÿ Welcome to my world.?ÿ ?ÿ?ÿ
?ÿIf you want to download it easily find a computer that runs Windows XP or Windows 7/8. It is possible with Windows 10 - I'm told - but it takes some IT skills to make it happen.?ÿ?ÿ
This?ÿ"Link"?ÿis a PDF that explains the fix for connection issues with Windows 10.
I had that "fix" working on Win10, and then along came the Creators Update. Good-bye fix, never got it working again. Get used to the USB drive transfer, looks like we're stuck with it. For the life of me I don't understand why Trimble and the rest of them won't make DC's function like a USB drive, just plug it in and drag and drop.
We got a loaner data collector and it hooks up fine with the PC, no issues at all.?ÿ
