Does anyone know of a quick way to convert a .survey file to a .raw file in the office, without buying Spectra precision office? All I want to do is convert the .survey to a .raw, so I can put it into Starnet. I don't need to do anything else. Right now, I'm having the crew convert it out of the data collector.
So far, I've tried the demo version of Survey Pro (it only works with files of 25 points or less), and the Spectra Precision JXL Style Sheet File Converter (it doesn't seem to have an option for .raw files).
I can always keep on keeping on, but it doesn't make any sense not to be able to make this simple conversion in the office (without having to buy their additional software). I must be missing something.
Thanks!
None that I know of, the only programs that will read the .survey file are Survey Office and TBC. Short of having the controller to export the JOB/RAW formats, the software is the only option.
I also do a conversion in the data collector and download the raw and job file. I'm not sure what good the .survey file does?
Exporting a .job/.raw out of the collector is the best way I have found too. I still have a copy of TDS Foresight/DXM that is nice for viewing .raw files.

It's a long shot, but the Trimble Ascii File Generator has a style sheet for converting .job files to TDS Raw format. Ascii FIle Generator and Style Sheet Converter appear to be near clones. Would that style sheet work in Style Sheet Converter? I don't know. Perhaps you could convert .survey to .job in Style Sheet Converter and then .job to .raw in Ascii File Generator.
Why doesn't Spectra just supply a style sheet for that?
I would love to be able to look at the raw data files on something other than a Ranger screen. They ought to make a supplementary software that is included with the original purchase of the field controller software that could be used on a windows desktop pc for viewing, conversions, etc. or maybe even a desktop pc version that will work in manual mode...?
Also, does anyone know if Survey Pro will work on a Windows 8 OS (not CE) field computer?

Go here and download Style Sheet Converter

It will convert your job files to any number of more readable formats. .fbk is a good one just for reading.

I just tried it and succeeded in producing a .RW5 file that looks like the real thing. With a few edits the StarNet converter converts the .RW5 to .dat format- without the descriptors. More editing to the RW5 would fix that. So not something you would want to make a habit of, but a possible solution if all you had was the .survey file.
I have my Windows 7 and 8.1 machines configured to open .RAW files in Notepad. Works fine for viewing and printing.

Thanks for looking into this Mark! Gives me an option if I really need it. I'll probably just have the crew download both the .raw and the .survey file from here on out. What a silly thing for it to not do.
All we do is export it in the Nomad and then d/l that *.raw file. It's like two clicks and voila. 🙂
I've been converting to .RAW in the Spectra software on the Ranger with decent success. One lovely thing I discovered this morning is making a field transformation turns all the side shot records into coordinate records and strips the raw data in the resulting .RAW file. Using the style sheet converter I get the same results.
