In the last week or so I have received about 4 calls from someone claiming to be from the Microsoft Technical Department. The person calling has an Indian accent and so far about as far as he has gotten is to tell me he is from Microsoft, click. 2 of the calls have been on my land line and 2 on my cell.
Does anyone have any idea what these folks want (other than access to my computer)?
Andy
Probably just want to chat and work on improving their dialect.
Maybe just lonely?

Andy,
Access to your computer is exactly what they want. If you string them along they will try to tell you that your computer has been reporting errors to Microsoft. Here is link, Tech Support Scam, for more information from Microsoft. If you allow them to gain access to your computer they will be able to access any data on the computer, install malware and/or keystroke reporting.
I know of someone (computer geek) that played along and played dumb. When they started telling him what to do he kept saying he could not find the things they were telling him to click. After several minutes he asked them why Microsoft would be getting error reports from a computer that was not using a Windows operating system? The only response was the CLICK as they disconnected.
Yes, I hung in with one until he hung up on me ... my guy tried to walk me through the steps that would enable remote access my computer so they can do whatever they want with it. I kept playing dumb and pretended to do what he wanted, and telling him to "hold on, my computer is slow", "that didn't work", etc...

My wife is more than happy to improve their vocabulary.:-P B-)
Yes we get the same bloke or his cousin calling us in New Zealand.
I either bust out laughing and hang up, because my home OS is Linux Mint. 😀
Or Tell them I run Linux and they hang up.
Or give em a serve in my best imitation base Anglo Saxon, and don't call again.
:-X
Scam? No doubt. Anybody that tells me he can remotely see several "problems" on my PC is up to somethin'.
They call here occasionally, usually "Steve", from Mumbai no doubt. I just tell them I use a Mac. 😉
I got a similar call, all he heard was **&((^^ you ...click. I dont care if I offended him.
I usually make up my own foreign accent and mess with them so bad that they usually hang up on ME!
Get these calls quite often. Usually in an accent I have a tough time understanding.
I ask them for where they are calling from and other information I can get from them and tell them my son is a police detective and he would be interested in speaking with them. That is about the time they hang up.
They just called me yesterday with the same story.
I messed with them for a while, told the guy I didn't have internet so how was it possible this was happening. He kept talking...
Then I listened some more. He wouldn't shut up!
I said, "Sir I think you're trying to pull a fast one on me. Why don't we both hang up while I'm still being friendly" THE GUY KEPT TALKING!!! so I got ticked off and said, "BEFORE YOU P#$% ME OFF!"
Got an instant dial tone.
Statistics
If this is a lone nut, then no problem. When you get the call from an organized center hang up immediately. They log your response and statistically analyze your pattern - time on the phone, number of words spoken, etc... The longer you are on the more often they will call.
However, when at a restaurant I like to answer and just leave the phone on the table so they can hear the ambiance.
Hello,
I cant understand you speak English.
Say this over and over, until they get offended, and hang up. Works every time.
I found out that my WIFI or "Hot Spot" will make them call. I can have my PC off and just turn on the Hot Spot (it has its own phone number it dials )and those idiots will call me on my phone in less than 5 minutes.
I also talk bad to them. I had one call me a "Bitch Boy". I think they call their goats by that name also.
"I have a particular set of skills..."
I have started trying to imitate Lt Higgins w/ St. Landry SO (our local crime stoppers).
http://www.katc.com/clip/11341644/crime-stoppers-for-april-1
(you need to watch to the end)
But I never get far with it b/c they usually hang up.
It is sad that with the good technology, there are always those that use it for bad. I still have a land line at the house and 80% of the calls we get are scammers of some sort. We usually do not answer any number we do not recognize, but sometimes I like to have fun with them.
I like to answer... "KMRN, you are on the air"
When they pause, I say... "Militia Radio Network, KMRN, you are on the air"
James
I LIKE Lt. Landry. He doesn't pull any punches.

Aloha, Andy:
I think this is the fellow that called you 😀 😀 Just a Aloha Friday humor...
"Yeah, man, you have called at just the rat time! I been tryin' to make a wire transfer of a pile of money to a buddy of mine in Nigerian and this dang computer problem you seen has hung the whole deal up. Now, I've tried to add some more money on top of the $150,000 that I had stuffed in there to begin with, but it got hung up. You know, I was just trying to unstop the internet clog by adding some more money pressure to the pipe on the internet, but so far it hasn't worked. Say, I'm going to try one more thing, but maybe you can call me back in about five or ten minutes in case this doesn't do the trick. Click."
