Take a look at Godaddy.com. Great prices, you can start simple and build to bigger things. Very easy to use if you want to have a do it yourself web page.

NameCheap is where I have my domain through, used to be with GoDaddy. GoDaddy spammed me all the time, I changed to where I am now on the advice of our host here, Wendell.

Wendell also hosts my web site but I would also use NameCheap for that if he wasn't.

GoDaddy is not a good choice. One of my sons is getting nickel and dimed to death by them. Their "basic" plan as advertized sounds good, but then they add on a lot of stuff that's very, very difficult to get rid of. Wendell would be a far superior choice.

This is the company that doesn't have to use the pretty girls to attract customers (no complaints here though). They have been in the business longer and for what you are wanting probably at a cheaper price.

Wendell can do that for you.
You can have your own domain without a website or your own server. At some point if wish to have a website you will need somewhere to put it.
