Hello, why autocad can not calculate the are of that complex polyline?

Is a big mountainous area (a part of it).

Also, the boundary function can not work.

I attach the file of the AutoCAD polyline.?ÿ

it's probably a 3D polyline. Change it to a 2D polyline and it should work. Also, I would be reluctant to use an automatic description writer with a 3D polyline........

Is it civil3d. We had a situation not long ago doing the same exact thing. I opened same drawing and didn’t change anything and it worked. The other cad person re opened it didn’t work so he just drew another line poly on top and used that we never figured out why. Its gremlins.

@cv I believe it. Even the folks that are good with it i am just learning it but the gripe all the time. It never fails when  someone is showing me some command it never freaking works. I have been doing all my deed and plats work and getting all my survey data and making the decision in tbc i have a almost completed plat now a few more text labels and the boss is very pleased with it. If i ever can get the templates and plotting figured out i would not even export to civil3d. This plat consists of 33 parcels not a subdivision. I created some layers for all my decisions with text. So the ls could see only that and he loved how i had labeled each parcel for decisions the same as what the scanned deeds and plats were scanned in as. Made it easy for him to follow my work. He asked for me to change and hold a different line and see how it fits so i did turned that on etc. i am sure the gremlin software can do the same. Most of what i am doing is not necessary just i asked him for the chance to make all decisions so i can learn. He will make final and off to civil3d it will be.

I used Civil 3D 2023

Use the "Area" command, then choose "Object" and select the polygon.

Sometimes there is one little issue, such as the line does not actually go to a point even though it looks like it does. Thus the polyline isn't really fully connected.

You can narrow that issue down by breaking your overall area into three or four subareas.  The area with the problem will eventually show you where the disconnect is located.

Just use the "Hatch" command then "Select Object" and click on the polygon. Make sure you have your desired hatch pattern and scale selected first.

@holy-cow

I think the bpoly command will detect if the figure "does not close'.

Would the “right click” and “properties” tell you if it’s closed or not?

-- attachment is not available --

Looking at it now, and seeing that it has worked for others, I think it might be one of your MAX variables might be set to low, MAXSORT, or maybe MAXSELECT.

This nonsense happens way more often than it should, imo.  Normally I turn on node snap and trace over the top of the line that is already there, flatten, and then try the calc.  You can also fillet with zero radius at the angle points, select all of the lines and hit join to see if you get an error, do a map check report, etc.

Thanks a lot for the answers, Now I have an extra problem the command boundary makes some small '' gaps '' as you see in the video, and can not fit very well to the existing polyline.

I attach a video for a better understanding of what I say.

Bpoly is finicky as it relies on what it and you can see.  This is why Bpoly doesnt work on the overall object, it's simply too big and has too many tight areas it can't see efficiently.  I turned it into 6 segments using Bpoly and came up with 311965 SF
