Well, after 3 years solo I ended up taking a position with a mid-size surveying firm here in the area. I just couldn't compete with the guys offering residential boundary surveys for $275-$300. That is not the price for a mortgage inspection, gents. That is a plat that has the "This Professional service conforms to the Illinois Minimum Standards for a Boundary Survey" statement on it. I guess "minimum" means different things to different people. Anyway, if anyone is interested in an equipment list, send me an e-mail. It's been a great ride, and I really wish things would have panned out differently. It's all for the best, I guess. My 11 year old told me I look like a geezer the other day, since my hair is so gray. I told him my hair was fine until I got married & had kids. Now I have a scar from the frying pan, too.

The $300 rate you set out is our area's general hourly rate for a crew !

Your Board needs to do an evaluation of how long some particular service takes on average in a particular geographic area.

Then separately, do a wage study and then put the two together.

I really don't think it matters. Like the lady who read me the riot act for wanting more than $100 for surveying her 1.5 acre parcel with a deck, patio, hot tub, and 3 outbuildings. Never mind the 8' tall hedgerows along 3 sides.

Rob, that seems to be the going rate for lot surveys everywhere in Illinois. Its a tough market and we get a few now and then, but I gave up a long time ago trying to compete on price.

Brother, this is not what you asked for, but it is free advice, so feel free to take it for what it is worth.

Based on my experience a couple ~ few times these many years solo (15 years now) may I suggest that you hang on to your gear, until you are sure that this new gig is actually working out.

I suggest that you sit on your stuff for 1 year.

I have been very glad that I had my business and gear to fall back on when things did not work out with my attempt at 'day jobs' in the past.
