When it comes to businesses getting things going for the first time in social media, it‰Ûªs okay to start small. It doesn‰Ûªt matter if you are a large, longstanding company or a fledgling solo operator. There‰Ûªs no good reason for you to jump into the social media frenzy and tackle all of the various networks. read more

I am going to "qualify" my vote. I participate a little bit in Linked In, though I am not entirely sure why. I was on Facebook for a while a few years ago and absolutely could not understand the attraction. Never used other social media (unless email can be considered such).

I have heard of instances where companies will advertize positions on social media only. I do not have any particular interest in learning all these new fangled things at this point. I don't see how it makes my life easier.

While I'm ranting like a curmudgeon, I absolutely do not understand the obsession with texting. I never have, never plan on starting. Just pick up the phone and have a 30 second conversation. Faster and easier than texting. My fingers are entirely too big for that tiny excuse for a "keyboard".

Edit: saw an appropriate comment somewhere on the internet earlier today. Along the lines of "before phones were invented, we wrote, then talked on phones, now back to writing (albeit abbreviated and often quite cryptic now). Something like a full circle type thing going on.

And don't get me started on the new credit card chip nonsense to supposedly make us more secure. Computers can and will be hacked.

"Faster and easier than texting."

Not when I'm in a meeting...

I do not understand LinkedIn t all. I made the mistake of joining and was bombarded for months to add people I'd never heard of - some from other continents!. I decided to quit it but it wouldn't let me! I found it to be more difficult to remove than Norton Antivirus - it was only when I got a new computer that I escaped. I firmly believe that it is a virus...

I got on Facebook to stay in touch with my sons when they enlisted in the Army; it ended up being a good way to reconnect with a lot of old friends and shipmates. We also have a band page, and a private band group where the members can share things that aren't for public consumption. I don't post much on it and try to avoid it when I've been drinking because the filter tends to come off and I don't like looking like "that idiot on FB".

I joined LinkedIn, don't ask me why, it hasn't proven to be of any use or value.

Obviously, this site is social media. So respondents who say "No" or "Never will" might want to consider that.

I find texting to be incredibly useful, both at work and away from work. It's easier and faster than e-mail plus people don't always see e-mail right away. And I don't need to make a phone call if I just need a quick answer or am just sending a status update. I have, however, consciously tried to avoid reading texts while driving, and definitely writing them. If I need to, I'll pull over.

Ditto what John said. Facebook is incomprehensible to me. I have little interest in twitter and most other SNs. I have participated on LinkedIn off & on, and probably would to a greater extent if I found the time to learn it's features and potential advantages better.

I use Facebook daily, just to keep in touch and share thoughts and photos, many of which are inane. It gives me a place to deposit the goofy notions that my brain works on in the background during the day.

I have a LinkedIn account, but I've never found any value in it. The only time I ever visit the site is to approve someone's link request.

I have a Twitter account, and used it a fair amount during the early years, but found that Facebook is a more flexible medium and connects more directly with people I care about. I bet I haven't posted more than half a dozen tweets in the last 2 years.

I have an Ello account, but never go there.

Texting doesn't fit my definition of social media, but I use it a fair amount to keep abreast of close friends and immediate family. It's by far the best way to coordinate anything with my wife and son when we're not all in the same place at the same time.

My kids refer to Beerleg as "Dad's Facebook" 🙂

I have a Linked-In profile - which has proved to be a complete waste of time

I participate in a couple of other online Forums - there is Kiwibiker and the NZIS member's board (which is near dead - it carries so little traffic you can shout and hear only yourself echo for months)

I'm not on Facebook and don't want to be

Speaking of which, I unfriended a bunch of folks on Facebook some time ago and am now regretting that decision. If any of you jolly surveyors would like to connect with me, you can find me at:

Facebook:

Twitter (a couple of options):
https://twitter.com/RPLSToday
https://twitter.com/HarnessTech

LinkedIn:
https://www.linkedin.com/in/wendellharness

I'm on facebook for friends and relatives' use.
I'm on twitter but mainly for posts about updates for software and instant traffic news
I'm on linkedin but haven't created any work from this. I'm always frustated that instrument companies gratulate their clients with their new purchases:-(

Voted "Yes, but very little." Have been working around and with computers since 1966. Online began with Compuserve about 1985 and had a web page within a month of Compuserve making them available. My current personal web page has not been updated since December 26, 2013. Very likely that page will not be updated any time soon. Have had a facebook account for several years and posted my first "Status" recently. That was something like "I'll check back in a week or two." Reminds me it is almost time to do that. I had my fill of being "connected" back in the Commercial/Citizens Band radio days.

In a disaster or other emergency (earthquake, mass shooting), instant messages are more likely to go through because they take much less bandwidth than a phone call. Even without an emergency, I've had times when my phone or the network is just not working right for a phone call, but messages can get through.

I'm on LinkedIn, but haven't really used it much. A few times I've been contacted there by someone who couldn't figure out my work email and wanted to ask a question. It is good for keeping tabs on (ex-)colleagues because you'll get the equivalent of a status update if they change jobs.

I come and go on FaceBook. I'll keep up with it for a few weeks then only check every week or so for a while. I have reconnected with friends from almost every school I've attended, but it probably helps that I have an unusual first name. I do tend to keep FB for friends and family, and connect with relatively few work-people.

I'm becoming quite successful at getting other surveyors to block me on Facebook.

I recommend Instagram....a picture says a thousand words, words can be mis understood, and believe it or not English is not the only language in this world. Instagram is so easy compared to the others.

Just go check out theses hashtags

#Trimble #gnss #landsurveying #leicageosystems #realsurveyors #surveylife,

Check out @surveylife, he posts shots daily from all around the world, so cool to see how others do it and enjoy it.

I've been using LinkedIn for a while now and it has served me well. I've had people contact me for jobs and I think it also makes a great online resume people can check out. The other day I was looking for a used Leica P20 scanner so I reached out to my LinkedIn community and two people came forward with good leads. It also makes it easy to contact people you may have known professionally in the past and would otherwise have lost touch with. For those that say it's a waste of time I'm wondering if you are using it to its full potential. For me it's been a great resource.

Do you use the free version or do you pay for it?
