Who else on earth, fusses with all the tools, toys, history, electronics, trucks, atv's, sunshots, ephemerises, theta, star shots, chain saws, files, history, digging tools, re-celling battery packs, fishing, magnets, compasses, declination, canned fish, monuments. Monument Drivers.flagging, paint, laws, science, history, chains, links, acres, and computers. Hard drives, solid state drives, sociology. Psychology, angry crazy people, wonderful fat spanish mamas, who feed us tacos, and enchiladas, or those corn husk things, tamales.
Dealing with drug dealers, booby traps, people who move, hide, and destroy our monuments. Studying the ribs on rebar, to determine the dates.
Going through deeds, dealing with title agents, real estate agents, cold feet, good food, dehydration, being threatened, having guns pulled on you, flat tires, road rage, prism poles, that become spears, if we slam on out brakes too hard.
Keeping peace with the wife, inlaws, and others.
Learning to fly, aerial photography. Shutter speeds, drones, megapixels, cows, livestock rubbing on our equipment.
Cleaning fresh cow poop, off our stuff, after a fast ride through a pasture.
Backing the atv into a dead tree, and the top breaks out, and lands on top of your atv roof, nearly killing you.
Swatting mosquitos. Spraying chemicals, that kill us. And them. Frost bite. Heatstroke. Then the phone rings. "You just won a trip to florida" but, you know it's a scam.
"To update you free google listing..."
Then, your kid needs to go to a dentist.
And, your cow needs feed.
And, you just get the news that you are gonna be a grandpa.
And you think.... What kind of world am I leaving for my kids, and grandkids.
My neighbor wants a 15-50 aluminum v bottom boat. That's 15' long, and 50" wide, with a 40 hp motor.
I now weigh more than I ever have... But I feel good. The high salt intake, has made me retain water.
Need a new cell phone. These things seem to have a life of 2 to 3 years.
My joints now tell me about weather changes.
And, trimming my toenails has become a 2 person job. I don't fold like i used to.
Life goes on.
Wow.
Whats a hard drive full of surveys worth?
Neighbor wants to borrow my come-a-long, and chains. Now the other neighbor wants to use the log splitter.
I want to buy a Javad "smart tip", (its a tiny metal detector). But, I should fix truck first...
Need to decide... Fix my truck, or replace it. Its a 1993 dodge diesel. Rusted out cab.
Decisions. Work. Clients. Phone rings.
So, ya want to be a surveyor.... Ha ha ha! Easy life!
Cones. Holes in road. Road kill. Trying to not become road kill. Yellowjackets.
There's hundreds more.
One thing for sure, it's not boring!
Need to fish more!

Most of that has been my experience also. I need add. Shovel snow, plowing snow and snow blowing. Chopping thru ice. Snowmobile sand UTV / ATV with tracks. Snow shoeing. 3d model for machine guidance of dozers, excavators and graders. Cutting line and blazing line.

What the heck is a roof on an ATV? My old piece of junk ATV doesn't even go into reverse anymore so don't have to worry about backing over anything.

John Evers did the tree top, thing, on top of his utv. I have an atv. No roof.
Someday, I think I want a utv. So I'm trying to decide... Flatbed, on one ton, with ramps, and custom boxes on the sides, or smaller truck, and trailer.
Hard to think it through....

Yesterday, you would have struggled to convince me of the 'fullness' of my life as a surveyor. I shot a big blank looking for the N1/4 of a section. Had three mag readings, but one sounded much more like a pin. The others were a little less consistent. Dug (jack hammered) a three foot deep hole two foot in diameter in the middle of a frozen rock road. Road had been regraded a few years ago so it's not unusual for the corner to be 18" deep. I just kept digging- er jack hammering. Don't even want to admit how long it took.
Finally, set up the GPS and shot the NW, already had the NE, and found the other mag readings matched the split better. Tomorrow afternoon I shall try again.
I know, I know, the only place we know the N1/4 is not is half way. At least it's 6ft off line.

Steve

Nice post. One could say jack of all trades, masters of nothing, I'd prefer to coining the term Master investigator/problem solver. In my parts I hear a lot of bitching (is that word aloud here?) about surveyors not being respected as professionals in the same respect as doctors and say lawyers, to that I say, if you cannot value a person that holds their shovel in hand with the same respect as their blacks law legal dictionary then you need more shovel time. Have a great week folks.

My wife even tells me that life with me is NOT Boring. Especially when I am not home.

I have been working from 150 to 550 miles from home for the last 11 years. Currently 450 miles. I get home about 6 times a year. I last saw her New Years weekend on Friday evening to Monday morning.

I will see her again on the weekend of the OSLS Convention where I will be spending about 20 hours getting 15 hours of PDH time. About 2 months since I last saw her.
