Anyone know of a good vendor who re-cells batteries for older instruments?
Batteries Plus - but make sure they have a good tech in your store.

Thanks. I didn't even consider them as an option.
Be sure to stay away from anyone doing that for Boeing 787 airplanes ...
How about ni-cad batteries for Dewalt tools?
:good:

Thanks. I've got a couple of old batteries for a Craftsman cordless drill. I'll check them out.
Thanks!
Re-celling batteries BEWARE!!!
Just heard from a dealer I use in Marietta, GA. He said if the re-cell isn't done correctly and they don't install the proper fuse you can fry your instrument. So before we all go off and get giddy about a Batteries Plus doing any work on our instruments make sure you talk to the tech who is going to do it and he actually knows what he is talking about. It has happened before. For drills I am not sure it matters, but for you baby in the field. IT MATTERS!! FYI. Thanks Beau!

Unlikely that there are any fuses inside of a battery pack, maybe a diode or resistor. People in the business of recalling battery's probably know a lot more about such things than a salesman who wants to frighten you into buying a new battery pack from them. You can re cell your own battery packs if you pay attention and draw a sketch of how the old was wired and match it, don't even need to know what the parts are to get it done.

Point taken, but he has no skin in this one as I am buying off of Ebay. I have known him for a long time and he would not have gone out of his way to 'upsell' me on a battery recell if it didn't matter. Just saying. I understand your point and many times it is going down just as you say, but if it came down to 50$ vs. 130$ and I can spend the extra 80 for the peace of mind. I will pay the extra. (Don't think those figures are correct, I just pulled them out of my arse!!)

I've always sent mine to West Texas Battery, and I've been pretty happy with the price, service, and product.

I have had good luck with Battery Pack Source at Woodstock, GA. The name of my contact there is Ed Abbott. He has done GEB70, GEB71 for the Leica and BT15Q for the Topcon, for me. No complaints, he has paid for shipping. The last time I sent some to him he sent a UPS prepaid label and sent them back by UPS. I don't know if he still pays for shipping.
He has a 800 number, 1-800-951-2965, or use 770-926-6628. I just talked to him to make sure he is still doing the re-celling of battries. He informed me that he is still on the job. You might give him a call.

Not always true. The Trimble Yellow brick has a 15A fuse hooked to the ground side of the battery.

Thanks for the information. And the Topcon that I am looking at does have a fuse.

Bet that if you look at the wiring diagram that the fuse you see is not a part of the battery pack itself, although it is in the same case it probably is in the circuit between the battery pack and the instrument connections. Not unusual to have fuse protection between the power source and the instrument. Started seeing them with the EDMs, some were rigged to blow if the wrong battery poles were used, reversing the polarity, the fuse blew before the EDM was even turned on if hooked up backwards.

just had mine Topcon handle batteries done at http://www.westtexasbattery.com
They did a great job and had fast turn around time.

Yes! Beware!
I had batteries for a Nikon DTM A10 done by a local outfit.
Apparently, they didn't properly insulate the pack from the case.
Fried the internal circuits on the machine.
Cost to fix was around $650.
I wrote a letter to them with technicians report on cause with a note that I would take it to Small Claims Court.
To their credit they reimbursed the bill.
