How many have made the switch to Robotic TSs?
GPS?

If so, when?

If not what are you using and why?

2004 leica robot
2005 topcon Hipers

Almost forgot about my 3 L1 Locus I bought in 1999.

A guy could do it without it, but why would you want to?

I went in business (Solo) in 2001

April of 2002 I bought a Trimble 5603 and sold to Ralph in 2011 when I replaced it with a Focus 10.

June of 2002 I bought 4 Locus units for static work.

March 2003 I bought a used Ashtech Z-Xtreme RTK and sold it in August of 2012 when I replaced it with a used Topcon GB1000 and Hiper Plus RTK system (very happy with it)

March of 2005 I bought one more Locus unit.

I wouldn't mind picking up two or three more Locus units, otherwise, I doing pretty good with what I have and working by myself.

Started using robotics and gps in April 2002 when I went to work for a local firm. Trimble 5603 and Trimble 4000SSI, 4700, and 5700.

Used a Leica 1200 smart station and gps from 2004 until July 2007.

Went solo in August 2007 and bought a Topcon GPT8005A and a Topcon Hiperlite RTK base and rover. Love the combination. I also have two PM3 units for static as well. I compliment that with two auto levels, a Topcon Laser level, and a Topcon CTS 3007.

I could not imagine trying to do the work I do without the equipment that I have. I have a wide variety of equipment, and each one makes the job just a little easier.

I have 3 Locust units just collecting dust. They worked fine the last time I used them, probably 2-3 years ago. If you want shoot me an offer and I will consider it.
email in profile should work.

I bought a Leica 530 GPS shortly after I started my solo business in 2000. When I wore that out I bought a Leica 1200 GPS and reflectorless. Great productivity devices.

Robotic TS only

Bought a used Topcon 815A Robot in Oct. '09, Didn't start using it until late spring of '10. Carlson Surveyor + with SurvCE. I wish it worked more like my old SMI DC's.

GPS 2000 (post processed)
Robotics 2006
RTK 2012

We bought a couple of submeter GPS devices in between.

In 06 the economy was booming and we couldn't keep up. The decision was made to buy either robotics or RTK. The money was basically the same. Because of our GPS hostile skies (lots of trees) we went with robotics. In 2012, after using several RTK systems for articles, we saw how we could use RTK to improve efficiency in our field work.

Carl,
How are you communicating between the robot and the Surveyor?

We're using long range bluetooth with our 8203 and a Surveyor. I've discovered a year or so ago that a long range radio at the instrument will pair to the Surveyor's internal bluetooth for about a six hundred foot range when the instrument side BT battery is good and charged. It's kind of nice not needing a bulky cabled rig on the pole for small jobs.

Let's see....

2001-2002
Robot - Trimble 5603 with CU and radio setup

GPS - 2 Trimble 5700 recievers with SNR900 radios
(backpack setups) with Zephyr antennas.
Base radio (same), MS750 base reciever, Zephyr
geodetic antenna.

2004-2005
Leica TCA1105 onboard collection on a PCMCIA
card.

2006
Leica in closet....
Trimble S6 with both CU unit, and TSC2 both with
survey pro.

This year....
I'm hoping for a Trimble R10 setup (if OPUS gets
an antenna calibration)

Not to try to hijack the thread... but...

Any feedback on Trimbles R10 units?

Just want to thank you. You really kept the gun in great shape and I've done quite a few interesting jobs with it. I used it to fund my S8 and I recently had a vx I was going to jump into, but besides the bells and whistles, there was not that much significant improvement over the 5600. I decided to stick with the 5600 and incorporate the parani Bluetooth system.
