As in, surveyed the entire perimeter of a section of land, found all 4 Section corners, and all 4 1/4 section corners, established the C1/4, and Set all 4 corners of a 40 ac tract, aka a 1/16 Section?
I don't really think I have ever done it.
I have found originals, Virgin find, originals, I have Proportioned in missing corners, etc, but to find ALL the stuff we are supposed to find, and performed a survey based upon it. Hmmm I dream of it. I suspect I could dig through some of the GLO retracements, and find one Section with all 8 corners. And, tie them, and use it to survey off of. I don't remember even doing that.
Nate
Yes!
Yes. It typically happens whenever the highway department has run through the section at some point.

Out west of Arkansas the property ownerships frequently are measured by the section. In such circumstances surveys of complete sections are more common.
I have in about 40 yrs of surveying about 10 virgin GLO finds. These are GLO corners, with 100% certainty of being originals, and that another surveyor was not ahead of me, to find it.

Nate,
Good help is hard to get...and even with good help, it is sometimes hard to complete the survey.

I have found corners purporting to be at the original location of an original grant that you could chase the witness trees back on, but to date, I have found, what I could prove, ONE original corner and the original witness tree from 1857.
Gibson, Maybe he is your long lost relative!
Nate-
When Gibsons and Grahams are involved, it must have been done to a standard !

Many times.

Wow, reading the end of that sure of makes the 'pack it up, there is rain on the windshield' crew seem like a bunch of wimps.
More times than I care to count
It helps, of course, having county roads along most of the section lines. They mess up finding original evidence. They are handy as all getout for moving quickly from corner to corner to corner.
More times than I care to count
I have resurveyed many sections. I have on most of them at least one SPM (Single Proportionate Measure) or missing Section Corner, that has to be DPM'd. (Double Proportionate Measure). And, many of these, OTHERS have perpetuated the corners. I am talking about ALL virgin finds, where you are probably the first surveyor to actually tie the original corner, and use it.

Yes

Maybe it's a perspective thing. I'm trying to remember the story i read of an early Texas or Louisiana explorer who was shot by his own men.

Very few roads where I worked. Those that were existing did not follow section lines. These jobs were out in the boonies in undisturbed areas or with some fences that more or less followed along the section lines.
WAIT A MINUTE!
YOU MEAN THERE'S ANOTHER WAY!?!
🙂
Well, I have done MANY retracements, and surveyed many sections. And have a number of Virgin finds, of original GLO corners. But, I have never found all 8 GLO corners, as virgin finds, and then surveyed off them. I have found a number of original GLO corners, where there was ANOTHER monument in common use, simply because nobody bothered to look for the original.

An example
Here's my latest example. All eight originals were recovered, the northeast corner of the section wasn't part of this survey but had been found during a survey in the 90's. The center 1/4 was also monumented with a metal fence post but I rejected it. All eight originals have also been found in Section 30 and they may well be there in Section 28, however I have not looked for the southeast corner or the south 1/4 in that section:

I will say that it is unusual, there always seems to be at least one destroyed in each section

Found all 8, Yes but I've never been the FIRST so beyond that it's always been retracement of those who came before me and retrace their section breakdown.
