Doing a little "ground truthing" for a marsh restoration "off-Cape" last summer I found this little nest in the woods next to the highway.

Gotta love the umbrella over the smoke hole!

We were running a cross section across Route 3 at this culvert that will be re-designed to allow total flow "Un-Dam the River" is the local cry.

Just to be clear, this wasn't a temporary camps site 🙂

I think that Daryl M. could have wintered her!

Or were they in there growling and snarling?

I've got this stand of bamboo out back by the old hay barn....
I could make up a new cabana with a design like that!! Rent it out as
one of those "Eco Tourist" bed and breakfast setups.... 😉

Nah, I kept to the exterior.

This was made out of marsh reeds, and as a matter of fact, the same type as in my avatar picture. My avatar picture was taken on that particular project.

Great stuff. I often feel like I am being watched or am inside someone's living room when I step into an urban woods.

It was pretty quiet around here today Ryan.

Yeah it was a good day here too.

I'll never forget a journey into an "urban woods" type of place that was surrounded by undesirable types. The main thing we noticed was how many stolen bicycles had ended up in that place. Kids crying all over town while their bikes were rusting away in this 10-acre thicket.

I'd be wearing chest waders in those spots ... no...I take that back...I'd be wearing a fully encapsulated nuclear biological chemical suit as my surveying duds...

What you've got there is a gigantic bowerbird courtship nest like this:

>>The most notable characteristic of bowerbirds is their extraordinarily complex courtship and mating behaviour, where males build a bower to attract mates. There are two main types of bowers. One clade of bowerbirds build so-called maypole bowers, which are constructed by placing sticks around a sapling; in some species, these bowers have a hut-like roof. The other major bowerbuilding clade builds an avenue type-bower made of two walls of vertically placed sticks.

And that's not junk around the bower. Hours were spent arranging that display-

>>In and around the bower, the male places a variety of brightly colored objects he has collected. These objects — usually different among each species — may include hundreds of shells, leaves, flowers, feathers, stones, berries, and even discarded plastic items, coins, nails, rifle shells, or pieces of glass. The males spend hours arranging this collection. Bowers within a species share a general form but do show significant variation, and the collection of objects reflects the biases of males of each species and its ability to procure items from the habitat, often stealing them from neighboring bowers. Several studies of different species have shown that colors of decorations males use on their bowers match the preferences of females.
