this is the Sw corner of the gravel pit from last week's [msg=240196]post[/msg]... more evidence about the goofy 1/4 corner.

this is the SE Corner of the section...

here's the NE corner of the section with the unusaul marks...

Markings are SOP...
for that particular corner (Center of the Township), under certain circumstances and certain Manuals. Quite common in these parts in the late 1890s.

I was unaware of that procedure. These stones are from 1905.
That looks like a good place to get stuck. I'm pretty sure I could get stuck there.

See Page 39, Section 76, 1902 Manual.
As I recall it started with the 1894 Manual, but it may have been earlier, I would have to check on that.

very nice..:good: :good:
You've got no doubt with that one: center of township stone. Nice! We have some townships in the area with those. They would always seem to find a really nice large stout stone.
But where's your snow, I been buried since late November and it's been snowing off and on since September.:-@
This area ( west of Flathead Lake in the Big Draw) is kind of a banana belt. also, +40F and 30 MPH winds help a guy out sometimes... the ground is still frozen though.
the ground is still frozen though
Hope so; cause that looks like a bog I'd be nervous driving into with the 4-wheeler let alone the truck.;-)
That's funny but oh so true. I got stuck in a gravel pit last week with not a drop of water in sight.
Pics from the field...unusual marks- a SIDE NOTE
One interesting thing about this is that my helpers for the day were 2 construction/survey techs- with their epoch 50- I asked them if they had ever worked on a corner rec and did they want to- they did- they both commented that they'd never seen a stone monument before. something to consider in the "experience" debate... 😐

Stuck
No kidding, Jim. I got stuck just looking at it, then my leg fell asleep and now I can't move.
I like the way he pulled off the road, though, so traffic can get by.

I wonder if anyone ever found a marked stake in a pit? I've looked for stakes but never found one. Lots of pits.....but never found a stake in one.
