Yep - It's true
I was out bid & lost out on a small boundary to a guy operating with a Leitz 20" gun, a HP41 and hand drawn plat
He could be a lowballer shaving costs to the bone, but he also could be the most conscientious and talented boundary surveyor in the area. The equipment doesn't tell us anything about the quality of the work.
For small boundary work that setup is hard to beat.
Been there, done that, survived until I could afford better tools.
will that meet your state min standards for closure ??
Why not, until about 20 years ago or so that was common equipment and closures were easily meet!

Don't feel too bad... You coulda lost out to some surveyor using a Texas Instruments calculator ...
Hey...I still use an HP41 everyday!

or a handheld Magellan with Google Earth.
Better than loosing to the guy who has a scanner, scans your old map, takes your name off, inserts his..certifies the map ..

hey i know that guy too!
I still have three HP-41's and use one nearly every day. I also have two HP-48's, but prefer the 41. I personally would not mind losing to a guy using an HP-41 because he is probably old school and still knows what he is doing.
My HP41 is a very loyal friend.

You still haven't explained why your service would be superior to his.
Hey, I lose jobs all the time to regular "layman" pukes who probably don't even know how to use a calculator, period. But, they know how to download a GIS map of their lot and take it to a lawyer and the both of them call it, and use it as, a "survey".
Got food, water and ammo stored? This person surveying with the HP41, which I have one of, and an 11C, and 3 48s, is the least of your worries.
Beech, ain't it?
Yep... I think we all have been underbid by someone that lowballs the price. Hopefully this guy isn't a crappy surveyor and does a great job.
We have a gentleman (I use this words loosely) that is always doing lowball jobs around here. Sadly, almost every time we find errors and problems with his work. Soon people will realize they get what they pay for. Way more costly to pay twice for the same job. But hey... he's close to retirement and it really doesn't matter, does it?
I would rather retrace that man's work and not the work of some button monkey with the latest RTK and no clue. I think most here used the same or similar equipment at some point and can still get very good results with it. I bet the HP 41 guy is as efficent with his tools at his chosen field of practice as someone with more "modern" equipment.

If the typical price for the survey in your area is $3,500 and he's doing it with those tools for $3,000, well that's just business.

If the typical price for the survey in your area is $3,500 and he's doing it with those tools for $500, well that's why I'm studying for the Series 7 securities broker exam rather than surveying.
Have you seen what a 41 goes for on Ebay these days?
