What's the best way to annotate or call found, on-line monuments? Whether found as part of your subject boundary, or as lot corners from adjoining surveys. What's the best way to establish a tolerance for calling it on-line and using a 'passing' call? If beyond that tolerance, what annotation do you use to indicate where you found it in relation to your line? For instance, "Found 0.25' Left/Right", or "Found 0.25' Inside/Outside", or "Found 0.25' North", or "Found N 04?ø25'23" E 0.25').

...thence N 54-23-37 E, passing through a 5/8" square iron rod at 56.75', for a total distance of 275.44' to a 4 inch diameter worm gear screw marking the corner commonly accepted as the center of section.?ÿ

I found coordinates for a 3'x 4' Stone, on-line, and missed it by 255'

?ÿ

It was supposed to be marking a 1/16th corner, North of my survey...?ÿ

"Found 0.25' Left/Right", or "Found 0.25' Inside/Outside", or "Found 0.25' North", or "Found N 04?ø25'23" E 0.25').

Anything within 0.35' is "on-line" in the real world. ?????ÿ

Let the attacks begin.......

Station and offset. Lot of older subdivision here with a foot floating around. Old chain and transit stuff.

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

If I found it and it's on-line then I accepted it and there's nothing to annotate.

@flga-2-2?ÿ

If it fits within a coffee can, with my calculated guess, it's golden. If you don't agree, you better have a damn good reason, that doesn't have anything to do with calculating.

yeah, that's a small number, once established junior monuments control senior lines,,,,,,,,,it all depends,,,,,,but the default is to accept, you need a good reason to reject.

The burden is on the rejector not the acceptor.?ÿ

If I were to depict a bearing and distance to something 0.25' away, I would NEVER show the bearing to the nearest second... probably to the nearest degree alone would suffice.

@dougie?ÿ

That's a hoot!?ÿ Some joker moved it the night before you went looking for it, just to screw with your mind.?ÿ Just an overgrown pebble, right??ÿ Was it the original color or did they paint it up for you with a big "X" on top/center?

@holy-cow?ÿ

?ÿ

This is the on-line description:

Top of 3' X 4' rock, (3' tall) Weyerhauser road. Point falls 10 North of center of road & 15' West of "end of road ". . Picture Point SOURCE:GPS BM REF:GPS datum AER#:27259 (Elev= Preliminary only/by GPS). (12/98). Ref:Photo:37-9. Route: 0 Milepost: 0

There were also coordinates; they fall about 255' west of the line; the East/West road ends near these coordinates, roughly 10' north and 15' west of the end of it; but no BFR, and no sign of anyone dragging it off.

?ÿ

?ÿ

This is what we found on the line (within a Coffee Can), a little bit south of the published Northing:

A couple of possibilitiesƒ??

bearing & distance point to point to point which would show the slight differences in bearing.

or overall bearing and distance along end to end with intermediate distances along the line with offsets to intermediate monuments. If Iƒ??m accepting the line points I include a note explaining that and the offsets are just to show my measurements.

No line with more than 2 monuments is perfectly straight. Even monuments set by the worldƒ??s greatest line surveyor move over the decades unless he set some sort of ultra stable monument.?ÿ

The facts drive the call for me. If the monument is truly 'off-line' (extremely rare) I show the distance along the line and note the offset as a distance on the side of the line where the monument lies. My notes or narrative explain my drafting technique.

More often I show the measured bearing and distance monument to monument, unless the break is truly trivial.

@jed if it's found evidence, how is it relevant as to whether it's calld for in the deed but is on line within reason?

@chris-bouffard?ÿ

The subject property is the SW quarter of section 9.?ÿ I find the original, undisturbed SW corner and W 1/4 corner of said section.?ÿ The SE quarter of 8 has newer 100 lot subdivision with 15 monuments set on the common section line.?ÿ While the new monuments do not add kinks to the section line.?ÿ I would show them all but call offsets perpendicular to section line if off more than a tenth of a foot off-line.
