Interesting video on how Leica reinvented the field coding.
Coding with Leica Captivate software
Looks smart, don't know if the frequent use of the stylus will slwo down fast coding as opposed to using only the keyboard (My favorite Trimble way)?
Any toughts?
Chr.
Looks very Field Genius, which isn't surprising seeing they are both part of same company.
I'm not sure they've made best use of continuous lines.
Having multiple (duplicate) points seems a waste.
Why not flag next point to be the last fence line and beginning of gate. Then end of gate is also beginning of fence. T junctions treated similarly.
Fence and gate would be line work attributes and point codes could be of user input.
In Field Genius we can join any number of points with same line code /attributes whilst having different point codes.
I don't see it as being too much stylus as opposed to keyboard. But maybe you have different input methods Chris?
I kinda like it. The HUGE thing is that you could be up and running F2F in a VERY short time. Most guys would be able to do F2F with this setup where now I feel most systems I have tried are clunky.
I only use the stylus for selecting points in the map for stake out. Grabbing the stylus en putting it away takes some time when I want to key (fingers)in some codes.
Maybe you can Key in with the stylus on the Leica controller. We have winters here in Belgium, we can operate the keyboard with gloves, the stylus is not so handy with gloves.
A gap option would have been nice for closing a fence with gate.

I can see how the "viewer" would be very useful, so you can quickly catch missed features or miscoded lines.
However, the system looks slower to me, and I much prefer a simpler approach to multiple lines, as in:
b fnc
fnc
fnc/b fnc1
e fnc1
e fnc/b gate
e gate/b fnc
e fnc
I use a line modifier very often, to prolong a line where the beginning or end is slightly out of reach, or move a point such as a power pole, as in:
b ff p2
ff
ff
e ff p3
pp mn2
I used the linework feature in Captivate the other day. However I didn't try using the keyboard other than then typing in the code. I looked through the "hotkeys" on the simulator and I didn't see anything that would change the different line codes or line numbers.
New Collector in 2 o'clock 105F direct Vegas sun. This picture doesn't do it justice, it was brighter then my Iphone 6 😉 . Also, those little red holes on the bottom of this picture hold the stylus. Nice touch
You can still use that coding system. This new line work is an addition to not the "only" way. I liked it.
I did a small cross section and i didn't feel like it slowed me down once i got the hang of it. But time will tell, i only spent 30 minutes on it. I couldn't take the heat lol
I have had my hands on a unit and mapped a few things. The new coding opens up allot of possibilities. I do not have a demo model yet to play with but now that you bring it up.... I think you may have to use the touch screen to perform some of the functions with the new coding. Once I get my units in and configured I will play around with the coding and see just how much you need to use only the touch screen.
I'm honestly more excited about the new collector.....does this mean the death of the CS15??? I hope so! They must have listened to the complaints. There is a big screen that one can actually see and larger buttons that you could actually push one at a time!
Can't wait to check one out!
What station are you running with this?
The way this joins lines makes FTF surveys so easy.
I didn't grow up on coding controlled line work and this type of input is a breeze.
I imagine the stylus is the key though, and would be fairly limited without it.
I'd be interested to know if it is written by MicroSurvey?
The similarities are there. This has a different screen but basics same.
Does the line work display it's attributes if tapped with stylus?
Tap and stake points, lines is a treat in Field Genius
I think that's the MS50 inst. case in the background.
What type of DC is that? Very impressive looking contrast, screen and function keys.
Dan,
Yes... the CS15 is gone. They are still available but the CS20 is taking the spot of the system data collector. The screen is 5 inches wide and is beautiful in the sun. The buttons feel very solid and the unit seems to be very well built. I think you will be surprised if you get a chance to demo a unit. There are three models... the top model has a Leica disto with a camera built-into the unit. Right now the model with the integrated Disto is only used in the GNSS Hidden Point routines. There will be more uses in the near future. The new Captivate software is well done. I am anxious to get our units and start trying some of the new bells and whistles.
The spec sheets are posted on the Leica websites now. I have the spec sheets for the new CS20 and the new TS16 or MS60 total stations also. The new instruments have the new 5 inch screen plus the new processor and main board. The new processor allows many performance improvements for existing hardware components.
Let me know if you want any of the new information or spec sheets. I can send you what I have.
Mark does it have a bar code reader?
Lee,
It does not have an integrated bar code reader. We have been told that several external Bluetooth bar code readers have been tested and will work with the CS20. I do not know what brand and models of the BT bar code scanners were tested yet.
I'm waiting for my flight home from Hexagon. The new Captivate software looks great. I'm just now loading the simulator to play with on the trip home The cross section routine that was previously available as a add on in now standard along with the ability to turn sets of angles to a single FS. I've used LisCAD since the early 90's and many of operation codes we use to control our line work has been replaced by the Captivate's coding. I really like the option to reverse the direction of a line.
The CS20 & CS35 look like a big improvement. The CS35 is an i5 ToughPad running Windows 8.1 pro. The CS20 is a little larger than the CS15 but the screen is to kill for. You can actually see it in the sun. Gone is the radio cap. The on-board Disto looks seems to work great for GNSS offsets and it sounds like the only reason it is available for TPS offsets was a lack of time but it will be found in a future release.
My only problem with Captivate is that I just bought my first CS15 at the beginning of the year. It sounds like Viva will be phased out over the next year and the old collectors are not capable of running Captivate. They will be offering a $3k trade in though. I think I will be going for the upgrade.
Yifan curious if these routines will be found in Field Genius?
Whilst really appreciating FG, there's a few areas that need a lick and a polish.
Some of these routines look straight from FG but with that "lick and a polish".
Thanks Yifan, look forward to it. Very nice to hear.
