Anyone from Texas know anything about this?

The obituary of a fellow I know says he was born in Fredericksburg, Texas. Since I'd never heard of such a place I checked out the Wikipedia listing and discovered this...

The Fredericksburg-Stonewall area has become known as the Peach Capital of Texas and Benjamin Lester Enderle is known as the Father of the Hill Country Peach Industry. He was Gillespie County Surveyor and a math and science teacher at Fredericksburg High School when he planted five peach trees and began selling the fruit in 1921. Enderle worked to develop the Hale, Burbank, Elberta, and Stark varieties. He began marketing them through the H-E-B grocery chain, and eventually had 5,000 producing peach trees on 150 acres (61 ha). Growers claim the taste is due to the area having the right combination of elevation, sandy soil and climate to produce flavorful clingstone and freestone peaches. The fruit ripens May–August, and consumers can either buy pre-picked fruit, or pick their own.

Anyone here speak Texas German? Apparently that area was settled by some very stubborn Germans who refused to give up their mother tongue. The following from the Wikipedia site makes that abundantly clear...

English is spoken by 72.73% of the population, Spanish by 14.77%, and Texas German by 12.48%.

The obituary mentioned above reported that the guy I know had lived in Albert, Texas in the 1960's so I started to hunt it up as well. Turns out it is a ghost town now roughly 15 miles from Fredericksburg. What caught my attention was a site listing the 10 most ridiculously expensive things sold on eBay. Number four on the list was the entire town of Albert...

Sold for: $2.5 million

Year: 2007

When people say you can buy anything on eBay, they’re not joking. In 2004, the five-person town of Albert, Texas was put up for sale on eBay. An insurance broker by the name of Bobby Cave scooped up the town for the cheap price of $216,000. After investing another half a million into the ghost town, Cave put it on eBay in 2007 and sold it for $2.5 million.

I know not of what you speak, but I have spent many a work day in Fredricksburg. The peach farms are all over the east side of US 290. There are many roadside vendors selling peaches right now, although I would suspect that the crops had a hard time during the drought. The Rain Gods may have dumped on the area, but I don't think it really relieved the situation.

Need to start making more rain turtles...

I have stayed at an old hotel in downtown Fredericksburg Tx. Nice town in the Hill Country. It has a lot of visitors and there are German restaurants in town and lots of peaches. There is also the Admiral Nimitz museum and art galleries and antique galleries. Matter of fact at one "Art" gallery, I saw some forgeries of a noted Fayetteville Ark artist for sale. I contacted him when I got back to Louisiana and months later received a reply of thanks.

It is also very close to Luckenbach Texas where Willie, waylon and the boys hung out as described by the song. I think there was a very popular outdoor music fest in Luckenbach at one time. I dont know if it still happens.

Funny thing you mentioned "buying" a Tx town. My wife's Uncle is a majority owner of a hill county town. I forget the name, but there pizza restaurant is pretty good.
