Does the armoring add any protection that an aftermarket case doesn't? I've been using an inexpensive case with rubberized surround on my S5 since I got it. I've only dropped it a few times, but the case -- which now has a hairline crack in it -- appears to have done its job. The S5 is water-resistant on its own, so with the added protection of the case I feel like I'm reasonably well protected, without having to spend the premium for the active version.
(I don't think the active versions are available for us on Verizon's network anyway, so it's a moot point for me.)
Anyone else recall the conversation on the old board in about 2005- everyone was saying "$500 for a phone?!?!?! I'll never need one....." now look at us...... we've done it two or three times....

I just paid $600 for my wife's exercise bike, so $500 for a phone I use everyday doesn't seem so bad.
Duane,
You should also look at the Apps you currently use in Android, to see if they exist in Apple iOS. For instance, I know there are a few Javad Android apps, are they also available for Apple? If they are not free apps, but do exist in Apple and Android. You will have to pay for them again.

I have a case for it but I never use it, the naked phone is tough compared to others I've had like my old iPhone, my LG phone. The active will be what I get from now on. I'm sure some of the cases will protect a phone better.

I can send and receive data by using a thumb drive to move files back and fourth from my Carlson2
Couldn't figure out how to do it with the iphone
^This.
How do you plug a thumb drive into a phone? Do you have an adapter cable with a micro-USB plug on one end and a USB-A socket on the other?
Edit: I just answered my own question:

Just make sure your thumb drive is FAT32.
I just keep getting used/refurbished Samsung S4's. They do just fine and still have the removable battery and SD card. I now use an Otterbox protector for it and that really keeps them from away from the normal abuse we surveyors dish out. The S5's also have the removable battery and SD card but I don't have any experience with them. You can likely get a used phone for $100-150 that is in very good condition.

Have not been able to get a thumb drive to work with my S5 and Verizon did not ever answer if it would or not.
Something about rooting the device was mentioned as a possible fix.
Phones with the new universal usb port are supposed to have that capability.

you got it my LG v20 actually came with the adapter
also i have bought adapters of of ebay for dirt cheap
I love the fact I can use Foxfi on Samsung for free (unlimited data). No need for another sim card to run my Ntrip. Can be on the phone and use data at the same time.
I use Galaxy s6. Haven't had an Apple for many years since I switched because I had a tough time getting my contacts, calendar etc. to sync with my pc.
I also like that the s6 keyboard has numbers without having to shift.

I've a Note 4
Had it a month and dropped it face down on gravel track.
New screen and a cover and haven't regretted ever buying it.
I use the stylus a lot to annotate sketches and screen shots, photos etc.
All kids have Iphones and I've played with them and their Ipads.
Much prefer Android.
Removable battery and micro SD are plus for me.
I pay outright for phone so don't have luxury of new one when any contract is up.
There are some really useful applications for Android and as said elsewhere if that's a feature of these phones you're after worth considering.
I recently bought a Samsung Tab A 9.7 LTE and find that and the phone a very useful combination.
One thing that seldom gets a rating is just how good these phones are to use as a phone.
My Note is excellent sound, very good on speaker phone, and in windy conditions.
Samsung does put its usual bloatware into these devices but I've learnt to love with such.
The 9.7 doesn't fare to badly so wonder how new Samsung phones are.

I am waiting for the latest release of Ubuntu Linux phone to come out. Ok it won't have any of the crapps that Android and iphone have but it may have a bit more privacy. I only have one or two apps I use anyway.

Both water resistant, but iPhone has aluminum case galaxy glass (probably needs a case). Wondering what others are using and why. Thanks for any advice.
Many thanks to all! Can't have data interrupted during a call, so gotta be android. The smart phone is strictly business, wouldn't have it otherwise.
Any Samsung phone/tablet (S7 excluded) is great.
Apples are for consumption and making hard cider. 😉

Jim,
OTG drive like this one would be more efficient. It has both a micro USB port (to Android Phone) and USB A port (to PC).
Beware that latest Android phones are switching to USB C ports.
