So, phone died, an old galaxy s3. Upgrade is to either iPhone 7 or galaxy s7. Which one is preferable for a surveyor? Both water resistant, but iPhone has aluminum case galaxy glass (probably needs a case). Wondering what others are using and why. Thanks for any advice.

I'm on an iPhone 6. Miraculously this thing has lasted for almost two years, well encased. I've destroyed 3 or 4 well encased iPhones over the years without hardly trying.

Wife and one kid have the new galaxy active. Wife dropped hers about 30 feet off a bridge (with a minimal type case) in the Downie river one evening last August, found it the next morning. Pushed the power button and it acted like it had been sitting on the nightstand all night.

Whenever this one goes kaput, I'm seriously considering the galaxy, based upon the above. Couldn't care less about software, as I use it mainly as a phone, camera, and email device. Seems a wash in that regard.

For me it comes down to whether or not you're okay with the Apple "walled garden" limitations. I prefer the more open platform offered by Android.

I'm still using the Galaxy S5 I got when I switched to Verizon 3 years ago, as it still serves me well.

All right, I'll bite.
What do surveyors use a phone for besides calling the missus?

I prefer iOS but it's a personal preference.

My work phone is a Samsung Galaxy S7 and it is faster than my desktop computer. I open PDF files of scanned maps, no delay, zoom and pan, no delay. My personal iPhone 6 is good but not that good.

If you are already an android user then I recommend you stick with that. The android interface annoys me in some ways but that's just a personal thing. The speed, storage, and camera are the best.

I suggest you stick with what is familiar, Android in this case. You may be very fruasted the first few days trying to understand a different operating system.

Kinda like standing on your head and reading a book backwards at the same time. If you like that type of challenge then switch, otherwise keep it simple.

Android
My S5 has hardly been out of the OtterCase like all my other flat phones were.
Still without a scratch after 3yrs.
Get something with as much ram as possible, at least 32gb.
The operating system and google apps and samsung apps and other stuff that can not be transferred to a micro sd card must fill at least 10gb

Most smartphones are too fragile for me - screens break, touchscreens fail, cases shatter.

And don't get me started on the 'compulsary upgrade every two years' thing that one particular company insists on.

The only smartphone I would currently consider is a Galaxy S5 Active.

But since I mostly text and make the occasional call I'm sticking with my Samsung GT-B2710...

I figure I'm going to use about 20% max of my phones capacity (as a phone, camera, and for music streaming, internet access, maps, fantasy sports, etc.) so I use an iPhone 7 because I find the interface more elegant.

I found the camera on the iPhone 7 a big upgrade from the previous versions. Download the Photoshop Express and/or Adobe Lightroom apps and it's all you really need for "vacation picture" type photography

I too still have a galaxy s5. All other in my co are on iPhone and VRS corrections will stop if you take a call. IT says there is a fix, but I don't know if the others have tried it. Only prob ever with Samsung is none of my chargers would work after it took a wave on the NC beach. Bought fancy chargers at Verizon store and all is well. They even charge it faster. 3 yo phone in may.

the advantage i found with Android is the USB host
I can send and receive data by using a thumb drive to move files back and fourth from my Carlson2
Couldn't figure out how to do it with the iphone

Add me to the list of those who use his phone as a WiFi hotspot for RTN use. Plus email and the web, texting with family and friends, and every once in a great while for a phone call.

You can't fly commercial airlines with a Samsung 7, I just learned a few weeks ago. I have the Samsung 5s so I was ok. My 5s has been great for two years now.

Unless something has changed recently, this restriction pertains only to the Galaxy Note 7, not to the S7. The Note 7 is a phablet, the S7 is a phone.

I have the S6 active, I won't get anything else but the active version, they are armored and it's a big difference.
