We're thinking about getting me a faster computer, which means Windows 7 with XP mode. Will that run my current AutoCAD 2005 Lt?
I can't speak much about compatibility with AutoCad 2005, but I can tell you that Windows 7 may be hard to find since new PCs are shipping with Windows 8. There may be some Windows 7 machines still out there, but you'll need to act quickly.

Yes, the Dell's are still available with Windows 7. Our accountant told us to spend some money by the end of the year (we are skinflints when it comes to spending), so we bought Vicki a new fast machine yesterday. That was the easy one. I'm the one with AutoCAD and I have to be sure it will run on a new machine for me.
It would be nice to have a much faster and bigger machine so I can organize all of our home movies and the thousands of color slides sitting in the closet.

Just got a new windows 7 laptop, 750 gg hd and upgraded to 14 gig ram. I didn't realize it came with 6 ( 4 and 2) and I bought 8 (2-4's) thus the weird 14 number. I didn't feel like screwing around and learning a new Operating system and saw that most of what I had installed wasn't ready for windows 8 yet.

Get the new computer for your movies, e-mail, internet and personal stuff.
Keep the old one for AutoCAD. disconnect it from the internet and take off all the security. Back it up 2 or 3 years and I bet it will run a lot better.

That's awesome! I didn't even realize that. But I purchased a new laptop a few months ago with Windows 7 and won't need to worry about a new purchase for awhile.

I haven't any personal experience with Win 7 and ACAD 2005, but I think it very likely that if you load it in "compatability mode" you will be good to go. If not, anything that runs on your XP box will run on Win7 in XP mode.
I have Win 7 Pro and am running ACAD 2K in the virtual computer/XP Mode with no known issues - I would think that 2005 would run the same.

You don't even need the virtual machine. I almost went bezerk trying to install the VMware. All you have to do is run it as an administrator.

It should not be a problem...
...running on a Windows 7 machine. I am able to run AutoCAD 2000i straight up on Windows 7 without bothering with the XP mode. I can also run Civil 3d on it but choose not to. I can do everything I need to do with 2000i.
I have also read too many horror stories already about things not running on Windows 8 due to no drivers and other such issues. I doubt that I will be leaving Windows 7 any time soon.
Everything I have runs on Win 7 without the XP vitural encabulator thingy. That includes Autocad 2000 and 2012, TGO and TBC. Much better than XP ever was.
...and the new processors are nice. Mine has the ivy bridge and
there is no boot up time. Quite a change from my old hp laptop
boot time.
We've decided on a solution. We're going to change/return the Dell we just ordered for Vicki and instead get the top of the line Dell. Huge hard drive, lots of RAM, really fast MHz. She deserves one. If I like hers, then I'll get one too.
Exactly the result I had Ralph!
Right click on the shortcut icon and select the "Run as Admin" box. Fast as a fox!

As many have said here and in other threads, get as much RAM as you can.
