I have been trying to get a Trendnet TU-S9 USB to serial port adapter to work for quite some time now and having no luck. I've downloaded drivers from all over with no luck. The machine see's the adapter but ultimately won't finish the install.
Anybody have any other ideas as far as another make of adapter that works well?

Some of those things want you to install the driver without it being plugged in. After the install plug it in and let the computer find it.

You may need to uninstall all the drivers you have been playing with and start fresh.

That may or may not help. 🙂

I had the same problem, tried everything including a 2nd adapter. My problem was that the software insisted on using COM1 that was in use by another devise. I finally let it install on COM1 and all went well except I had to replace the original COM1 devise on my system (XP-Pro).

I just buy a $20 multi-port serial card to plug into a PCI slot. Then you have 2 or more serial ports available.

Thanks guys, I've tried the driver solution with no help, I think the card may be the way to go. When I ordered the machine that's what I was supposed to get but they sent me an adapter instead.

I have tried several adapters and the serial card worked the best.

As a note, sometimes you need to go to the device manager and change the name of the com port to what you want it to be. You may need to rename an existing COM1 to another COM to free it up.

Same boat here, I tried an adapter, finally gave up and bought a card with a port on it. I think it cost less than $15 including shipping.

I agree with the card route if a desktop, if a laptop then I would suggest a Brain Boxes ExpressCard Serial Adapter, have never had an issue like I used to with the USB ones.

I understand that some of the cheap (fake) prolific chips from china don't work properly with some windows and/or real prolific drivers due to a change in the drivers that prolific made to counter the fake chips.

Serial adapters with the ftdi chips are supposed to work very well and don't have the driver problems. Google FTDI serial adapters. I haven't tried one yet.

My IOGEAR - GUC232A works very well.

I use the Keyspan Tripp Lite USA-19HS

I have not found anything it will not connect to.

Not so with other adapters, but the Tripp-Lite works so well, I don't use anything else.

Make sure to install the driver without the hardware plugged in under compatibility mode and admin. Some of the adapters have to be configured or mapped. Once installed:

1. Open Device Manager
2. Expand the Ports (COM & LPT) list
3. Right-click on the COM: port you wish to reassign and choose "Properties"
4. Select the "Port Settings" tab
5. Click the "Advanced" button
6. Locate the "COM Port Number" drop down (most likely bottom left) and change it to what you want it to be.

You may want to temporarily disable your antivirus software in addition to the above. Good luck. I bought the com card, too. I am still runing XP Pro.

Not sure if you're using a laptop.
I use my adapter on my laptop and had a lot of trouble.
I kept swapping USB ports and eventually found one that synchronised.
I just use that port now and never have any trouble.
Not sure if that's relevant to your issue.
