So I just found out yesterday that Spectra has discontinued Survey Pro software. I'm starting to consider a new DC and the Ranger 5 has been recommend but I'm also looking at the Ranger 7.
?ÿ
Any opinion on which one has been found to be better??ÿ Yes I know what a hot topic this can be ?????ÿ
?ÿ
Also does anyone have any experience with the new Origin software (that replaces Survey Pro)?
?ÿ
I kind of like that the 5 is Android so that I'm not completely ruled by MS!
?ÿ
I mainly perform topos and an occasional boundary. I use a SP80 GPS and Focus 35 TS.

Huh, this makes me kinda happy ???? I was never a fan of Survey Pro. We have some Spectra gear that came with it and we opted to make our SurvCE/PC work on our Ranger 7 DC. Interesting that they did away with it, I really thought a lot of folk were digging it.?ÿ

I see that Spectra Precision is marketing something they are calling "Origin". Which I am going to guess smells a lot like Survey Pro.?ÿ If you are going to go with those devices I'd think that would be the thing.?ÿ

Looks to me like the Ranger7 is the same as Trimble's TSC7

If so, they are the least popular data collectors in our office - the boys still go for the TSC3 in preference.

We tried a TSC5 - ranger5 maybe - and found it to be not much better.

Too big, too bulky, off balanced and they get caught up on vegetation etc.

Yes the screen is easier to read in direct sunlight - but not that much better.

But it is the battery life that is the real pain - need to carry a spare to see the day through 🙁

@jimcox?ÿ

Yes, the TSC7 is huge and heavy. It seems to me to be unnecessarily so. An Ipad is a fraction of the weight. Weatherproofing and ruggedizing, I get it. But does it have to be built of solid lead??ÿ?ÿ

@norman-oklahoma My understanding is Origin is 'Access Lite'. So Survey Pro really is ... RIP.

The Spectra Origin software is Trimble Access rebranded.?ÿ The only difference is that it will not work with Trimble gear.?ÿ You can go to the Origin Help Portal and search for supported equipment to see the gear you can use.

Supported equipment (spectrageospatial.com)

Access is quite good software, IMO. So, getting back to the OP's question, I'd be looking at this product to run his SP equipment.?ÿ

@norman-oklahoma @fairleywell what do you know about Ranger 7's compatibility with Trimble Access? We have two Rangers that we were considering for this. I see your comment on tsc's running Spectra Origin, so thought you might know. Thanks!

Now that I have the new access I like it much better than the previous version. I'm used to it and it's simpler than any version of Trimble software I've ever had. But the TSC7 and I assume the Ranger 7 is huge, not for me. I'm sticking with the TDC600 and the TSC3 for the Robot.?ÿ

@mightymoe

Why stick with the TSC3?

Trimble make a device called the Electronic Data Bridge (EDB10) which has both bluetooth and radio - you can use it to drive a robot with your TDC600

@jimcox?ÿ

I might look at it sometime, the crew that uses the Robot doesn't get to have my TDC600. Only I get that. ?????ÿ
