My trusty HP48 may have bit the dust.

Sure glad that I still have a spare GX, NIB, never been opened. I bought a spare back right before they stopped making them. If I remember right, Fry's was selling them for $120 or so at that time.

Have you checked out fixthatcalc.org? I think they take on repairs periodically, but I'm not really too sure what's going on there. Might be worth inquiring about....

I use to use 48s, AND swore by them. And they were great for the time. I actually took my last functioning 48 and gave it to the City surveyor two years ago (with a data cable) so he could collect data on his ancient TS without a pencil and field book. It was a cleansing experience.

My suggestion:... Walk away. The survey gods are trying to tell you the nineties called...they want their HPs back. There's so much else out there that works so much better. It IS 2015 after all....;-)

These are the normal keys that quit working. On mine, the power key quit working. I found the problem to actually be the connection that is between the screen and the top row of buttons. If you do a slight squeeze there, do they start working? If so, you can wrap a big rubber band around it for a temporary fix. I check fixthatcalc and they aren't accepting any more calculators to fix and not sure of another place to get it fixed.

I have a couple HP48 that I might part with but not my GX units.

It will never be the same, but search for an emulator for your phone; they work!

My HP 41CX quit working :(. Found an app for my Iphone that is exactly the same and all the programs are available. Cost? $9.95. Alot cheaper than the original pric of the 41cx

I had a conversation with the guy at fix that calc several years ago and he told me that well over half of his repairs were done with with his first procedure which involved taking the calculator removing the batteries and any cards and placing it in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner in a bath of distilled water, running the cleaner for 30 minutes, then taking the calculator placing it in a tupperware container with uncooked dried rice and placing it on top of his refrigerator for 1 week to dry out. If yours is dead in the water then it would be worth a try.

On a hijack note, I just got a call from a "friend" of a good client that needs his property surveyed here in town. I generally steer away from private residence surveys in Norman, but this client is a good client...so I guess I'm roped into it...

Anyway I just pulled some of the corner refs I will probably need and found this one:

Thanks. That was part of the work we did for the Lindsey Street project. This was the first job I did for the gang on Bart Conner Drive.

Story. Our contract was to establish control for the project and delininate right of way and centerline alignments. Another outfit was to do the topo. I adjusted the control and prepared a detailed report and map, and passed it on tho the project manager within a week of contract signing. As we were working on the boundary parts we met up, by chance, with the topo crew in the field. They had their own control points set, sometimes within 10 feet of ours. I told the PC, a crusty old dude, that we had established project control, yada, yada, yada. I got the PCs email and sent him a copy of my report, which was a 50 page pdf with sketches, notes, complete listing of points, StarNet report, etc. And a .csv file of the control.

We eventually delivered a nice .dwg of the section corners and alignments.

Several months pass. Kelly gets a frantic phone call from the project manager and I am called on to defend myself.

The coordinates on the section corners in the topo aren't exactly the same as the coordinates quoted on my CCRs. Differences on the order of 0.1 feet. It's a survey screwup! Why don't my CCRs match the topo? Heads will roll! Of course, the project engineers had ignored the alignments I prepared also and made there own from the topo ties.

It didn't take long to explain how it was a failure of project management and the whole thing got swept under the rug double quick.

You'll be happy to know they're actually building (aka total devastation) the Lindsey St. Project. My only connection with the mess is keeping OG&E within the R/W. And the City of Norman personnel are being their usually selves....

I included ties to the next adjacent PLSS corners and SP coordinates in part because I was pretty sure that everything within the Lindsey St. right of way was in imminent peril. Hope it turns out.

I DO appreciate the 1/4 line ties radiating from the corner. I think the s 1/4 cor. at McGee is a goner, but when the dust settles I'm sure it will wind up back where it belongs..;-)

You're probably right Paden, but call me cheap or just call me ol' fashion. I'm from the school of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'. I just know where everything is on the HP48 blindfolded and can program it to do whatever I need and I'd rather spend my time learning other things. I've had the same phone for 5 years while everyone else upgrades theirs to the latest every 6 months.

Shouldn't reference 9 be the WEST quarter section corner of Section 36?
