Howdy!
TL;DR
If you just want to cut to the chase, please scroll to the bottom of this message for the bullet list of VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION that you'll need in the very near future regarding RPLS Today.
Can you believe it's already been over 2 years since we switched to this new forum format? I know that some of you like it and some of you don't like it, while others don't really give a crap, just so they can come hang out with fellow surveyors. Believe it or not, I've been listening to all of the feedback, good and bad, and have kept notes of the things people have asked for over the last couple of years. I was able to implement some of the requests, while others were installed but eventually failed and were removed. I'm hoping to go back and re-evaluate some of those things and see if they are now possible.
All that said, this coming Friday and Saturday (August 18 & 19) will be the days we work on this. We may get started on it late Thursday night if we are ready. I've been teeing up as much of it as possible in my copious free time and doing what I can in advance. So, if the site is down on those days or part of those days, you'll know why. It is scheduled maintenance so there will be no need to panic. Fridays and Saturdays are typically our slowest days, hence the reasoning behind why I have chosen these days.
In addition, I have moved all of my Harness Media clients to a new hosting platform that is AMAZING. So I've decided to move RPLS Today onto this new platform as well. This will actually save us approximately $50 per month of hosting fees, because I'm getting an equally amazing deal due to the fact that I have so many clients on the new platform (multi-website discount).
And finally, there is one more tidbit of information that you need to know: there's a really good chance that everyone's passwords will be reset. An update of this magnitude plus migration to a new server means that we may have to do a full password reset for all users. This would be done as a security measure, and I take security VERY seriously, especially with a website that's as popular as RPLS Today. So, if you attempt to login when we return and you can't get in, please check your inbox for information about how to reset your password -- also, if you haven't checked your profile for awhile, please do so and verify that you have the correct email address associated with your account.
So, as you might imagine, there's a lot of work to do in a 48 hour time slot, so don't be surprised if you see a temporary splash page pointing out that the site is down for planned maintenance during the entire time.
Summary
Here are the primary bullet points that are VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
- RPLS Today will likely be down for maintenance all day on Friday, August 18th and Saturday, August 19th, 2017.
- You may receive an email message from us during this time regarding a reset of your RPLS Today account password; please look for this message in your inbox and if you don't see it by Sunday, please check your spam or junk folder.
- Please visit your account page NOW and make sure your email address is current before Friday, August 18th, 2017 to ensure you receive any important messages from RPLS Today regarding access to your account.
- Another way to ensure you receive important emails from us is to whitelist any emails originating from rplstoday.com, harnessweb.com, or harnessmedia.net in your email program.
If you have any questions, please reply to this post and I'll do my best to answer in a timely manner.
Thanks!
Wendell

I shall endeavor to get extra snootiness in prior to the update to compensate for the missed time. I may increase my level of haughtiness as well, at no additional charge.
Good thing that you're not in Texas!
It would take several weeks due to the additional complexity...
😎
No time for that now! The computer's starting!

This is no crock: circa 2003 I was in charge of a small drafting team in a civil engineering consultancy. So one morning I gave one of the new guys a couple of markup drawings, maybe half a day's work. So come the end of the day I head over there, full of optimism, expecting a good result. The result was zero and the reason given was "... the IT guy changed my computer during morning tea and when I came back I couldn't find the power on button".

Apparently, he was in Texas. LOL
I blame the eclipse. And my decision to do this on the weekend of the eclipse.
Whew! I was wondering if I needed to start looking for another place to get my fix!

Wendell, not to be picky, I'm not exactly paying for this service, gulp, but next time I hope you will please follow best practice and do a dry run in a test environment before trying it in the live environment. 🙂

This was at least the third time Wendell has launched the website. The other 2 times went fine. Really, it's not like any ambulances drove off cliffs because RPLStoday was off line.

I'm fairly well addicted to it. You guys provide my daily dose of humor and I get cranky if I don't get it. 🙂

I'm so addicted that I resorted to RPLS.com and made my annual check in. Even with this site down for 5 days RPLS was still crickets.

You're assuming we didn't do that.
