My dad left San Diego, because of the general sense of pressure and frustration of city life.

As surveyors, do you run into such stuff?

These are wild!

No bird feeders, no parked cars. Paint your house.

This could suddenly change the value of a house.

Selfie Stick:

I don't want to live in a HOA.

I've never lived in a HOA and I've seen enough to make me never want to.?ÿ My sister and her husband live in one in the Dallas area and they've been harassed a couple times over dumb things.?ÿ They have a boat which must be parked behind a fence or they get letters.?ÿ They have a corner lot and a tree is near the corner.?ÿ They got letters saying it must be trimmed.?ÿ My brother-in-law paid the first time but then they looked at the plat and noticed there's some sort of easement slicing across that corner and the responsibility of trimming the tree falls on the HOA.?ÿ They showed the HOA, the HOA blew it off and continued to fight them until my BIL got a lawyer or housing authority on them at which point the HOA caved.?ÿ Ridiculous but typical behavior from what I hear about these organizations.

It's interesting that HOAs existed long before zoning.?ÿ The desire for conformity (and/or exclusion) is strong amongst a large number of folks.?ÿ

Growing up in rural Maine, I thought having a couple of junk cars and an old skidder tire in the yard was something to be proud of.?ÿ I can remember gossiping about the neighbor (two miles away) who, "spends all his time messing around with his lawn."?ÿ Imagine my shock when upon moving to North Carolina I was told of a tool called an edger and that I was expected to use along with copious amounts of Roundup.?ÿ I despise the waste of time, money, and resources that goes into maintaining a lawn, but when in Rome...

?ÿ

I'm all for HOAs if you want one.

They are created as covenants?ÿ by attorneys to "run with the land" and those words burn my ass higher than a 3 ft ??? because who are they to attach legal doctrines to land in the first place.....

Don't get me started.....

And they are usually run by tenants with a Napoleon complex.

Given some power, they turn into tin-pot dictator types.

I know myself better than to sign up for that kind of abuse. We have sensible covenants but no HOA. Someone comes onto my property and pokes a selfie stick into my private space they're going to quickly be making an appointment with a proctologist.

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

I'd rather have neighbors with polka dot houses than an HOA.

@williwaw

And a court hearing too.

Your fee simple probably extends to the lowest allowable FAA designated flight space....or at least it did until Amazon paid to own the easement through it...... ?????ÿ

Every house (4) I have lived in had a HOA and I'm glad they did. They made sure the whole subdivision looked the way it should, which increased our values more than those that did not. Of course a nut or two become board members and create havoc but that's normal. Now if you really want to have fun attend a board of directors meeting of a condominium association. Everybody yelling at once, teeth falling on the floor, spit flying everywhere and someone of some sort of importance banging a gavel like a jungle drum. I know I am on a condo board. ?????ÿ

That truck is awesome, they should be proud to have it in the HOA. It's a classic.?ÿ

I have never understood people who are so much like their neighbors that they don't mind ceeding decisions about their property to the whole neighborhood. Not for me.?ÿ

I once subdivided a property for a client in area where the HOA prohibited subdivision. It was very enjoyable.?ÿ

@mightymoe

My guess is that the HOA loses in court and pays the truck owner's legal fees.?ÿ

HOAs are a weird breed where you cede property rights to your neighbors ostensibly for the good of all to preserve property values.?ÿ I've seen some goofy restrictions like no clotheslines, no outdoor pets, have to repaint with approved colors, no Ham antennas, parking strictures, etc.

OTOH the non-HOA subdivision I grew up in was a new upper crust 3-5 bedroom family housing semi-estate type hillside development (1/2 to 3 acres), quite pretty.?ÿ Some owners ran horses on their property with a small backyard stable.?ÿ Crazy thing is my Dad bought it in 1964 for $29,000 including construction of the house and it was last sold by his widow in 1989 for $200,000.

?ÿ I visited it 50 years later and it's become a slum with 5 bedroom studio rentals, folks who've turned their backyards into vehicle junkyards and abandonment of lawns to the weeds, not to mention unmaintained dilapidated housing rented to Harley types looking to live cheap and who irritate their neighbors with their habits.?ÿ

So maybe HOA restrictions are a good idea to prevent degradation of a local community.?ÿ I'd not buy into one because I may want to tan hides or blue firearms in my garage, not allowed.?ÿ But that's just me.
