What would you do if you won a half a billion dollars?

Well, actually less your penalty for taking cash and then Federal and State taxes.
It's still a chunk of cash.

Again, exactly what would you do? and why?

Continue surveying until the money is gone.

1. Buy a nicer place to live here in NYC.
2. Buy a place to live in Canada, so I'm ready for global warming.
3. Buy a place to live in the Costa Rica, so I'm ready for global cooling.
4. Buy a place in Las Vegas so I have soemthing to do with the rest of the money.

😉

Buy land and farm it until the money is gone then go back to work. Should last about 5 years.

Not tell my wife. Just kidding. I don't really know, probably give most of it away (church, charities, scholarships, etc.). Really, how much money CAN you use?

I would probably buy a modest house in the north and south to live in at different times of the year, depending on seasons.

Do my part to break us from foreign oil dependancy by putting solar panals on both, and buying a luxury plug in hybrid or two ... or three.

Then, I'd want to make sure that my kids and grandkids are taken care of. Buy things that make more money. Right now, I would snatch up dozens of decent houses, and hire a real estate management company to handle the day to day rental business. That's something that would involve relatively low involvement from me, be a cash cow, and leave something behind for the kids.

Just the other day, I was talking with someone about how that breaks down. I guess it is high enough of a jackpot that I'll waste a couple of bucks on the very bad odds of winning.

Very very very rough numbers:

With the cash options you get a little less than 400 million.

Federal and state taxes you end up with around 200 million.

Even at a very low rate of return, I could not foresee even spending the interest income you could generate each year by just depositing it in the bank.

It always amazes me how quickly some of the lottery winners have lost everything even on smaller jackpots.

> what would you do?

I know a lot of people that are hurting, financially right now. I'd make sure that, that doesn't happen any more....

> and why?

I'm compassionate.....

Oh, and I'd by a big boat and through a big party on it!:-D

Because that would be a fun thing to do..

Many things, but one of them for sure would be to set up a trust so this board gets funded as long as Wendell and Angel are in charge.

Poutine and Leafs tickets for all hurrah!

First, set up college funds for the kids, period.
Second, my church needs a new building. Done
Third, the fire department needs a new station and a few trucks replaced. Done
Fourth, build a kick ass house on my 67 acres.
Fifth, attempt to buy all of the tracts that surround me. It would add up to about 800 acres.
Sixth, find 1000 acres on the Neches river and high fence it and put it in a family trust so that all of my heirs could enjoy nature and hunting
Seventh, make my home %100 off the grid with electricty and water. To hell with utility bills
Eighth, invest some, enjoy some, travel, and help those who need it. I might even make the other 9 holes for our community golf course.

Survey WHEN I WANT TO, NOT WHEN I HAVE TO.

Winning that kind of money would be nothing but a curse.

Winning that kind of money would be nothing but a curse. I am totally serious here. No matter how generous you are, your friends and relatives would get upset. You would always be expected to pick up the tab. Anyone new that you met, you could never be sure if their friendship is genuine.

You could buy a state or country for that amount.

I would be sorely tempted to give it all away to some worthy entity like a State Park.

I don't buy lottery tickets, though, I don't like the odds.

Newt's campaign could use the cash.

Only a curse if you make it so, would not take any more effort to make it a blessing than it would to nest over it like a hen and peck at all who approach. Anyone who you think is a friend and would attempt to make you feel guilty for financial gain is not a person you need to keep around, you would not miss them. Heck, Greece is broke, maybe you could buy that Country and let the people of Greece elect a Congress to handle your wealth.

Dave

"The old bloke died and left me four thousand pounds a year in his bloomin' will. Who asked him to make a gentleman out of me? I was happy. I was free. I touched pretty nigh everyone for money when I wanted it, same as I touched him. Now, I'm tied neck and heels, and everybody touches me. A year ago, I hadn't a relation in the world except one or two who wouldn't speak to me. Now, I've fifty, and not a decent week's wages amongst the lot of 'em. Oh, I have to live for others now, not for myself. Middle-class morality." -Alfred P. Doolittle (Pygmalion)
