I assume the source data for their maps comes from various state and county GIS sites.?ÿ We know how ?great? that can be.

He does have some disclaimers about accuracy and the sample map says "Not a survey' but I'll bet there are a lot of states where the board might not approve of doing this for money.

Does my Samsung do GLONASS??ÿ I was surprised to see that mentioned.

Those surveyors refuse to acknowledge that people can have legitimate reasons for wanting the approximate coordinates we provide. Reminder: If you need to locate your exact property corners and lines on the ground then please contact a licensed land surveyor.

Q: I have a property line dispute with my neighbor. Can your service help me?
A: Maybe. On average the GPS coordinates that we produce should be within 30 feet of accurate. No, the data we produce is not survey-grade, however for many purposes it is close enough. But if you need to know exactly where your property corners and lines are located, then you need to contact a surveyor. While the online map links we produce are not surveys they can help you decide whether or not you need to hire a surveyor.

So he adds a navigation app to a tax map?ÿwith an aerial background. Seems like a useful tool for owners of rural tracts. You've been able to pick up a tax map with a background aerial for what, 80 years now? +/- 30 feet seems about right.

I wrote and suggested that the best use of a cell phone to find your corners was to use it to search for a Land Surveyor near by, and then call them!

Again, people spending $200-500k on property and not seeing the value in paying $2k or less to find out exactly what they're buying or have already bought.

Maybe the state societies need to start a marketing and advertising campaign, showing some home buying disasters that could've been avoided by having a survey.?ÿ And maybe also include something along the lines of, "your realtor has no real knowledge in land boundaries and is unqualified to give an opinion on boundary location, and there is no recourse if/when you end up in a boundary dispute with your neighbor, based on said realtor's statements".?ÿ

On a tangent to that, the company I work for in Heavy Highway work has a couple properties that we've contracted with a local firm in that area to prepare mining permit drawings for borrow pits.?ÿ I was given a cad file that had sparse data for the proposed pit limits.?ÿ I sent the information to stake the corners out so the clearing sub could start clearing the remaining portions of the proposed excavation.?ÿ My chief calls me and says there is a problem, the pit limits are over the property line by 20-30 feet.?ÿ Our project manager calls the permit drawing creator and asks why the pit is encroaching the adjoining property.?ÿ Their response back was "Our contract called for no boundary or topo survey to be done. It's all based on GIS data."?ÿ A co-worker asks me how did they get in this situation and my simple response was "Because no one consulted me on what should be done."

Now I've got to try to piece this "proposed" pit together and align it to the property with zero setback information.
