I'm kinda shocked in this long and fully invested deep description of the company and it's expectations and values, safety, is never mentioned once.

Culture is a hard thing to cultivate.

The day when recruitment was taken away from those who do it and handed over to those who will never do it was a dark day in the history of most professions.?ÿ Step one.?ÿ Do not talk down to those being recruited.?ÿ Do not use flowery terms when straightforwardness would be proper.?ÿ Do not define what you are attempting to say as that indicates you are the one who cannot communicate rather than the potential recruit being too stupid to understand plain English.

This complaint is not aimed at any one particular employer of skilled surveying staff but to all who fall into these traps of having the unknowing making the decisions.

Sounds like a terrible job with no opportunity to work with a PLS or learn any real skills that can be put forward.?ÿ They'd be better off to just subcontract the fieldwork to local surveyors.?ÿ?ÿ

They don't want to do that because they can't control the cost. That's why a lot of engineering firms have a surveying department. Control.

To be fair, there is a pretty good sized pool of career field hands in their 50's who don't have a place in a lot of organizations because they (the organizations) are unwilling to pay experienced guy/gal wages for someone who doesn't have the real potential (or desire) for upward mobility in the company.?ÿ?ÿ

Well, yeah.?ÿ A business that can't control cost is a business that won't be around in eighteen months. I've been on both sides of the table and it's very easy to control subcontractor fees; but the fee you pay a subcontractor and the project cost incurred by using that subcontractor can be vastly different.?ÿ

I need both fingers and toes to count the number of times a subcontractor has assured me they can deliver drawings in my standards then I get a cad file with everything on Layer 0 with the line types and colors all changed by entity. Or firms that ignore some of the spec in the RFP because "that's not the way they do it around here".?ÿ ?ÿNow I have the choice of eating $1,000 worth of billable time to fix the drawing or send it back and have to scramble to find work for the design team that was going to be using the survey files, and screw up my project timeline to get the design to the client.?ÿ?ÿ

To be fair, I was just pointing out that they didnt mention safety, and as other pointed out kind of set the tone of how things are, discipline, perfection etc.

Every business's goal is solely to make money. How you make it, and how you use or utilize your talent or warm bodies is a cultural thing within the company.

This is a great job for someone who has an adequate set of skills to work within their parameters and can afford the time and the lifestyle.

I've done it. It's great experience, to a level of limitations that you decided upon when you applied to the job.

That's why we work until we find those limits, and seek out other than current to progress on to the next level.

Carry on.

?ÿ

Every business's goal is solely to make money.

Every business must make at least some money to sustain itself, but that isn't necessarily its primary goal, and it is rarely the sole goal.

@norman-oklahoma?ÿ

I'm quoting from the old engineering school book "The Goal", and understood that the concept is the idea there.

it's a complex debate.

edited.

wrong guy.

Eliyahu M. Goldratt is the writer I was referring to.

To be honest, I have met several of their employees over the years and found them to be solid surveyors.?ÿ They do good work.?ÿ My problem was with the tone of this form of recruitment.?ÿ it causes you to believe you will be working solo in whatever environment and location you are needed.?ÿ I would not sign up for that.?ÿ Also, if this is what they are seeking, then they should be advertising for a PLS, period.

@bushaxe?ÿ

Even more important is scheduling.?ÿ That is the biggest advantage of having in house surveying for a civil engineering firm.

@holy-cow?ÿ

Their job description sounds like it was written by the HR department which usually doesnƒ??t have a clue about the technical aspects of the position being filled. But that is no reason to not apply. ?????ÿ

Iƒ??m sure theyƒ??ll have better luck than me finding good help. Itƒ??s a super tight job market around here. Anyone worthwhile around here is already working and when I tell someone they can expect to be working 50-60 hours a week through the end of fall, oddly enough, they donƒ??t seem interested.

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
