You should have created a legend featuring a single item: an image of the legend with text saying "legend."

LEGEND
THE WILD MAN OF CAPE COD
For years after Bellamy's pirate ship was wrecked at Wellfleet, by false pilotage on the part of one of his captives, a strange-looking man used to travel up and down the cape, who was believed to be one of the few survivors of that night of storm, and of the hanging that others underwent after getting ashore. The pirates had money when the ship struck; it was found in the pockets of a hundred drowned who were cast on the beach, as well as among the sands of the cape, for coin was gathered there long after. They supposed the stranger had his share, or more, and that he secreted a quantity of specie near his cabin. After his death gold was found under his clothing in a girdle. He was often received at the houses of the fishermen, both because the people were hospitable and because they feared harm if they refused to feed or shelter him; but if his company grew wearisome he was exorcised by reading aloud a portion of the Bible. When he heard the holy words he invariably departed.
And it was said that fiends came to him at night, for in his room, whether he appeared to sleep or wake, there were groans and blasphemy, uncanny words and sounds that stirred the hair of listeners on their scalps. The unhappy creature cried to be delivered from his tormenters and begged to be spared from seeing a rehearsal of the murders he had committed. For some time he was missed from his haunts, and it was thought that he had secured a ship and set to sea again; but a traveller on the sands, while passing his cabin in the small hours, had heard a more than usual commotion, and could distinguish the voice of the wild man raised in frantic appeal to somebody, or something; still, knowing that it was his habit to cry out so, and having misgivings about approaching the house, the traveller only hurried past. A few neighbors went to the lonely cabin and looked through the windows, which, as well as the doors, were locked on the inside. The wild man lay still and white on the floor, with the furniture upset and pieces of gold clutched in his fingers and scattered about him. There were marks of claws about his neck.

Foggy needed there to be a legend on his drawing. Might as well make it a Cape Cod Legend.

I take a copy of a copy and if it doesn't show up clear, it gets changed

I've never had any problems with any other counties, just that one. It bugs me when I see a plat and all the lines have the same line width. Its hard to tell what line are the subject property.

There was a County that would not allow any text smaller than a 0.08. There was a good reason, when you picked up a copy it would be printed by a copy machine where 11x17 was the largest size and anything smaller than a 0.08 would not be legible.

Generally the feedback I get back from the County Surveyor's Office make my product better.

If you think you are demeaned by people who ask questions or make comments about your map before it is recorded, you should hear everybody after it is a part of your permanent record.

(comment not valid for those who are perfect)

Arizona has a Staute regarding this.

I found this from here ( http://www.surveyor.asn.au/for-surveyors/NationalGuidelinesForCadastralSurveys.pdf ).

It makes quite a good argument for reporting. Boundary info is too important to be locked away in a surveyors filing cabinet and then burnt by the family when they die.

Not a surveyor but I have been looking at records and think that the required filing would make it much easier for everyone. After doing some research it seems that some people won't submit the survey if it shows them owning more land than what they are being taxed on. And if you are surveying for a subdivision and your map shows less land than what you are paying taxes on they do review it and make sure that it is correct. Neighbor subdivided a lot he was being taxed for 1.80 acres and survey showed subdividing 1.57 acres into a .65 and .92 acres lots. So the village wants to make sure your survey is correct since .23 acres is being removed.

I appreciate the reviewer's comments.

I would like to see the checking fee issue get fixed by legislation. Something like a fixed nominal fee plus some other source of funding such as a dollar or two on every Deed that gets recorded so that the burden of checking maps is shared by the client and the public since the lion's share of the benefit goes to the public (I often use maps that have been on file for decades long after the original client is dead). Some County Surveyors just don't get that, though.

I pulled into Nazareth, I was feelin' about half past dead
I just need some place, where I can lay my head. -Joe Cocker

I don't know if Joe Cocker ever covered it, but The Weight was written by Robbie Robertson and originally recorded by The Band. (Perhaps you've confused Levon Helm's voice with Joe Cocker's.)

I fixed it.

I think the song came on Pandora and it said it was Joe Cocker, I'm not on expert on popular culture 🙂

Dave,

So you don't remember that being one of the "mood-enhancing" songs from Easy Rider?

I have one R/S in San Joaquin County. The symbol conventions are different from Sacramento County, primarily an open circle in Sac is a dimension point and in SJ it's a set monument. The map checker asked me to conform to local drafting practice so I did. Reading forum comments over the years I guess I'm supposed to be a hard-ass and tell map checkers to pound sand on non required stuff but I'm used to working in lots of counties so formatting requests just don't bother me.

It's always good to lead off with "Perhaps...." I learned that from my wife. 🙂

I sometimes pick up new practices from map checkers. Prior to filing in SJ I always just noted SET 3/4" IRON PIPE etc. After SJ I add the length (never thought to do that before), SET 3/4"x30" LONG IRON PIPE etc. I always add UP 0.5' or SUB 1.0' but I got that from the Surveyors at parks since it was their standard practice. It's really handy for the next guy to know is the thing buried or is it sticking up? I don't remember when I started spelling out IRON PIPE but I no longer abbreviate things. Think about it, some Surveyor 100 years from now may not know what an I.P. was. I get that in old field notes, weird abbreviations, what the heck does this mean? Maybe it never occurred to Knute Nelson that I would be reading his notes 50 years later.
