We found this industrial screw looking object marking a corner on a large survey we're trying to finish but I don't recognize this object as anything I have ever encountered in the past.?ÿ I can call it an 5" dia. industrial screw with a heavy duty mounting flange, having approximately 8' exposed above ground and moved off of plumb by the roots of the trees next to it, but that just isn't setting right for some reason.
Does anyone here recognize this implement
?.
That is not at all familiar to me.?ÿ Are there any markings on the top or bottom of the tee "handle"?
I've seen something similar on an old printing press.
N
Hard to tell what it came off of, but it's an Acme thread (possibly square thread) drive screw for a pretty hefty piece of equipment.?ÿ That thread design can take a heavy load.
I don't want to ask a dumb question but if you know it's marking a property corner, that would make me think it's called out on a previous survey. If so, what did they call it?
To answer your question though, I don't know what that is.
@squirl?ÿ
Unfortunately, this is a non-recorded and not a standard monument.
It's a dandy.
A dandy what, I don't know exactly.?ÿ Probably came out of a defunct factory that was being scrapped out.
If I had to guess I'd say it's part of a worm drive flood gate screw to jack up a sluice gate, maybe part of an irrigation or flood?ÿ control system.
Thank you all for your comments & suggestions.
I want to see the person that carried that SOB and twisted it in the ground!
That looks like the screw that was used to raise and lower the draw bridge at the Tower of London. How did it get over here?
I can only speculate, but I'd guess that it was hauled in by mule team and placed using block & tackle rigs.
There used to be several saw mills in the area of this find. What is the possibility of this being the worm drive for some platform to raise & lower the logs as they were fed to the saw blades?
One thing is certain.?ÿ The neighbor won't be disposing of this monument and claim it never existed.
Maybe a warning to trespassers? Proceed any farther and you're screwed in a really big way. Btw, where's the dimple go?
I want to see the person that carried that SOB and twisted it in the ground!
Or maybe you don't?ÿ

LOL!?ÿ Sasquatch?
It's hard for me to tell from the fotos, but is that threaded? or are those parallel grooves and ridges?
That should settle the discussions about 1/2" versus 5/8" rebar being set.?ÿ If your not setting at least a 5" by 8+ feet iron, your just not doing it right!
Yes, this is threaded. The general consensus is this shaft drove a worm gear to raise/lower some extremely heavy machinery. With 8' of the drive shaft exposed, whatever was being moved traveled a moderate distance.?ÿ
