A client with a small boundary survey asked me yesterday, "What can you tell me about surveying that nobody really knows"? Without hesitation I said that I spend at least 3-4 times the amount of work, on a project, than the client actually sees. They seemed surprised. Any better answers off the cuff?
it is all a huge scam. all we do is copy records that are already on file in a big secret room at the county that only surveyors and gmen have access to.

Chicks dig surveyors
You are talking about the ones with feathers aren't you? :bored:
Land surveys are like Art work... no two pieces are alike and some cost way more than others
That measuring and math is only a small part of the job. That often the biggest part is application of boundary case and statute law, which is surprisingly grey.
And, that rarely are 2 surveys are the same.
I like to tell people that in the early days of our Country, the Surveyor was among the top echelon of citizen and to consider how much land was explored and opened to expansion (for better or worse)by them.
I have heard that in many areas the order of importance to the community was:
Doctor
Surveyor
Pub Owner
Lawyer
How about the amount of education / service time and testing required to be licensed?

That asking a surveyor, "How much for a survey?" is like asking a surgeon, "How much for an operation?"
chick DO dig surveyors
especially this one...
My dad always said: "Son, there's money in the bottle."
So, I don't know if we belong on your list now.
Or it's like calling a mechanic and saying, "my car won't run, how much to fix it?"
Mechanic replys, "could be $5, could be $5,000, I need to open the hood first."
chick DO dig surveyors
That chick's a duck!
The best one.... 😉
If you ask 10 land surveyors their opinion as to where the boundary is, you'll get 14 different opinions.

:good: That one made me chuckle.

Now that's that sad part. (that one made me cry)
I always find it interesting to explain that I am not only surveying their property, but also all the adjoiners. Their respective parcel is just part of a big puzzle I've got to solve, thus I've got to spend considerable time nowhere near their parcel, but am surveying in other monuments.
The easy part is putting the stake in the ground, the challenging (never say hard) part is making sure it's in the right place.
Once they get over the 'deer in the headlight' look, they like that notion and have more appreciation for what we do. Plus I let them know that I'm the guy on the hook liability wise for placement of that marker. They like that too.
Plus I like your 3X time away from the property as total time spent. They never realize that, especially when they have the county GIS map in their hand.
Now when it comes to contractors, realtors, developers.... all those ideas get tossed. It's all about the money
Great topic Mr Wind
