I'm not sure if this info has been on here before so I will tell the truncated version of mine. I just got back the the doctor after being tested positve for red meat allergy due to a tick bite.
I will get tested again in 6 months but for now cannot consume red meat. Since surveyors spend more time in the woods, we should all be aware of this. This is relatively new information so the Dr. could not answer all my question but this is what I know.
The difference in this allergy and others is that the reaction takes place a few hours after eating. As opposed to peanut allergies which happen instantly. I break out in hives but some react much worse. They think the amount of red meat and the fatty content of the meat seem to be big factors also. The tick does not have to be attached any longer than a few hours. Google "red meat allergies and ticks" and you will see all kinds of information on this study. As for me, its hello Chick-Fila.

I saw something about that about a month ago. It said it was the Lonestar Tick that did it.

That and most male surveyors I know, if faced with the option of giving up red meat or slaming their 'nads in a car door, would head straight for the garage.

Thank you for the warning. Are you on any kind of medicine? I was working in a place earlier this year where the ticks were absolutely horrible.

I wish you a speedy recovery.

James,

That is a tough call, but I do like chicken!:-D

I am in Nova Scotia Canada and am now starting to be on the look out for them, was never an issue here until the last couple years. Have not had any on me "knock on wood" but have seen them.

Quite a bit north from Maryland.

I'm not on any medication. Really none you can take except benedryl, if there's a reaction. I also got into a bunch of chiggers 4 years ago, probably 300+/- bites, and wound up getting shots for hives twice. This was before the doctors made any connection between the ticks or chiggers and red meat. From what they say, the affects can wear off. They think the chigger bites caused the reaction then and I got better. The tick bite I had was this past May and caused it this time.

Why would bite a tick when you could have red meat? 😉

Interesting you should post this now, and hope your reaction subsides.

My youngest son is just now (last 2 days) having an allergic reaction to something, the doc does not know what. He has itchy red welts that come an go on his arms, legs, trunk, and head. maybe he was bitten by a tick.

I'm not sure life without red meat would be worth living.

I got into a mess of those little ticks yesterday. I scrapped them all off and the floor looked like I shook a pepper shaker. Now I'm covered in little red welts and the itch is driving me crazy! I got into them a couple of years ago and about a week later I broke out in hives from my waste down and had to go to the Dr. and get a steroid cream. I hope I don't have to go through that again this time!

Matt
