MeTV has great old programming.?ÿ One of the episodes today for The Rifleman is titled, "Surveyors".

A surveying party has set up camp near North Fork.?ÿ Young Mark overhears two of the surveyors talking about how they killed a third surveyor and how they are planning to rob the bank.

Typical case of bad people being surveyors.

I may try to take a break between 2:30 and 3:00 this afternoon.

The old westerns are great because they often portray real disputes over fences, railroads, grazing, homesteads. Etc. I try to watch as many as I can. In one bonanza, the villain shot up two authentic transits in their wood box with his shotgun, and that of course ended that "claim survey" for this episode but good. Surveyors got on their horses and ran right off.

Memorable Entertainment

I watch all the old westerns on rainy Saturdays starting with Trackdown at 8:00 am. Really enjoy "Wanted Dead or Alive." Heck, I like them all.

I collect old Coleman lanterns as a hobby and am a member of a collectors forum. We often have threads about lanterns seen on TV or in the movies. There are a couple of episodes of the Rifleman where Coleman lanterns have been altered to look like oil lamps to appear period correct. The first Coleman lantern was made in 1914, so way after the time period depicted in the Rifleman, which I think was the 1880's or so.

I missed the first two minutes.?ÿ I think Elliott, the good surveyor, had a chat with Mark where he explained how important surveying made him feel.?ÿ That must be about where the other two also killed him, without Mark knowing anything about it.?ÿ If there was any survey action or gear it had to be in that first two minutes.

The bad surveyors did in Elliott then went about planning to rob the bank in North Fork.?ÿ Mark was supposed to deliver milk to their camp each morning.?ÿ When he arrived they weren't there so he began to read some book about surveying that he found in their tent.?ÿ That put him to sleep almost immediately.?ÿ That part felt real.?ÿ The bad guys didn't know he was in the tent as they returned talking about their plans.?ÿ One bad guy didn't want to do it the next day, which was Sunday, but the other one insisted.?ÿ Mark heard part of what they were saying but not enough to be at all clear about their plans.

When Mark gets home he tells Lucas what he overheard, but without the specifics Lucas was certain he was imagining something worse than what it really was.?ÿ Boy, was he wrong.?ÿ The main theme focused more on father-son relationships than the heist or surveying.?ÿ In the end, Lucas saved the day then came home to tell Mark that he had been right all along.

@paden-cash

Thanky, sir.  That solved that little mystery.

There was some sort of gadget attached to that tripod Elliott was putting in the wagon just before he was shot down in cold blood for not agreeing to help rob the bank.
