I see here on BeerLeg fellows braggin' on their Tilley hats. I went to the Tilley Site and am wondering...what model number or fabric are y'all clamorin' about?

Actually if you want something more fashionable, you have to go with the LTM6.
That one gets me so many compliments when I wear it.
There have been two times that a woman has mistaken me for her husband when I wore my Tilley!
Let me just say that it does not happen without the hat.
Nuff said.

I have the LTM8 with the mold/mildew resistant fabric and wear it at work and for around town outside.

Bucket Hat from Eddie Bauer

Dan,

I got this one at an Eddie Bauer Outlet. Some might call it a "bucket hat". I think it was about $10. It's a thin nylon and it has something like a 60 SPF rating. The black is breathable nylon mesh, like gym shorts. I have a tan and a dark blue one. I don't think I could wear a thick canvas one, it would just be too dang hot. I occasionally have to put one of those 12" x 12" super micro sop up cloths under it to catch all the sweat, but it keeps the sun off my face and ears, I can look through the instrument if I need too, and I can get in close to the level bubble on my prism pole (robotic solo here). It's best thing that I've seen for headwear.

I like the LTM3 AIRFLO® Nylamtium® Hat. My first was one of the canvas ones and it was hot. The LTM3 isn't exactly like having a ceiling fan up there, but the venting helps and the fabric is lighter. The green underbrim is really nice on bright days. The hats with the mesh sides are not all that breathable, they could do those better.
I am on my 4th Tilley, the previous 3 being replaced for free when I finally beat them up. If you take a close look at my avatar, you'll notice that the front of that hat is showing typical wear after a few years of leading with my head in the brush and brambles. It just adds character. Try to find a local retailer like REI. You'll want to try some on, if only to find your size. The fit is a bit different, nice and loose.
I don't think you can do much better.

LTM8 Mesh AIRFLO

This is what I wear... WON'T leave home without it It keeps me cool and out of that sun. side note... was out on a boat and it blew off the back. we were trying to outrun a big storm and couldn't go back to look for it. I called Tilley to order another one and after talking to the lady on the phone, she sent me a replacement for the shipping cost! smart company!

LT6

I love it. It goes with me anytime I am outside. I have received more comments about how nice the hat looks than I can remember. It has the widest brim that Tilley makes. I changed out the chin strap that the hat come with to a long brown and gold boot shoelace so if I need to hang the hat on my back for a moment I can. The soft brim also works well with looking in the instrument (although I don’t do that very much anymore). I am on my second hat of their lifetime warranty. The first lasted about 7 yrs of hard work and hard play.

I don't wear those silly hats. I have a bangora straw hat that I get about three years out of for $25 and they work well.

Keep your boonie hats, but keep your hands off my cowboy hat! 🙂

I have one that I paid less than $10 for that is Blaze Orange for the brush and for the open I have a couple of Shantung Panama's (One Stetson & 1 Bailey). One will usually last about 5 years under heavy use.

I can't see $80+ for a cloth boonie hat.

Due to the sensitive nature of my skin I have to remain covered as much as possible this time of year.

This is what I ended up with a few years ago after wearing out straw hats.. only $20 and it's lasted two years so far, and going strong.

LTM3 AIRFLO® Nylamtium® Hat....I have one of these and it works pretty well. One of the main advantages is that it is crushable so it travels well.

Now... women don't go all wild when they see it....

I prefer wearing my Stetson Straw.... but the Tilley is usually in one of my trucks.

Works good on canoe trips too....dip it in the river to get it soaked and put on the head! Cool!

(don't let Kent McM hear us talking about Tilley hats...)

Well said.

Tilleys are overpriced, sort of a cult thing, like Rolexes. I own one, find it a bit hot and the brim flaps like a chicken above a certain windspeed. I bought mine on a whim after losing my last good hat.

Well only one style of the tilley comes in red so it should be a no brainer for you. 😉
