Did a survey where the calculated point was right next to a tree.  Been 50 years since it was last seen.  Pulled out the metal detector and it rang really nice and the same amount on all sides.  Didn't bother it and set a witness corner far enough away.

Seems like the tree grinding company might be on the hook to pay a surveyor to install about 8 line monuments.

My last home had a lot corner in the root of a large White Oak tree.  I made sure the neighbor knew where it was and flagged the fence on both sides.  I didn't try to leave notches because White Oaks have "shaggy" bark and it would soon disappear.  That was over 30 years ago.

A 30" diameter tree is probably at least 50 years old. Probably a good deal older. Around here prior to 50 years ago pipes were much more commonly used for property corners than rods were. Also - the law here has always said that the rod/pipe must be 30" long.  So if the stump grinder is in Oregon, that is not likely a property corner.

@norman-oklahoma

Actually, only plat corners set per ORS 92 specifically call out monument lengths.  ORS 209.259 just requires the monument to be 'durably and visibly marked or tagged with the registered business name or the letters “L.S.” followed by the registration number of the surveyor in charge'.

@john-putnam

You are correct, technically. But the practice has long been to follow chapter 92 requirements when resurveying.

I agree that it is common practice and often required by county ordinance, who really wants to stock different size mons.  But I don't feel bad about taking a hacksaw to a #5 bar if needed.

Years ago I got into a spat with a central Oregon county surveyor.  It was back in the days that control surveys for government agencies required an RS.  I set a butt load of photo control for the national guard's training center (spent most of my time worrying about getting run over by a tank).  For the most part all I set were hubs or spikes in the sagebrush.  I filed the survey per ORS and the CS got pissy about the fact that I did not set monuments per ORS 92.  He insisted the intent of ORS 209 was to follow the 92.  I kindly disagreed and told him he could have had a county ordinance if he really felt that way.  In reality he was upset that I was doing work in his backyard (CS was also in private practice and was that kind of guy).  In the end I pulled everything when we removed the targets.
