An old friend posted these pictures today. He is up at the Sturges Rally after riding his Harley from Philly in three days.
I don't know how NOAA got their data but it would be sketchy to say the least.
Anyway, he also said that it was topless Tuesday up there but refrained from posting photos for the sake of decency.

After a quick download of a USA shapefile from ( https://www.census.gov/geo/maps-data/data/cbf/cbf_nation.html ), plotting Belle Fourche on that and then drawing a circle centred on Belle Fourche, I would tend to agree that it is a bogus claim.

Just think of the local mayor unveiling this mark and how proud they would have been. Who here is cruel enough to burst their bubble?

Cant speak for the US one, maybe if you take into account all US territories like Guam etc?

Either way here I am standing at the Geographical centre of the Australian mainland. Taken 2 weeks ago 🙂

I just spent a week crossing back and forth over 45 degrees north. I wanted so bad to rip those 'halfway between the equator and north pole' signs out of the ground...

I am still trying to grasp the methodology barring all the calculus referred to in the link provided by flying solo. @base9geodesy
I know I am a dummy. I do tutor middle school and Jr High students in pre-alg, geometry and trig. If I presented this problem to them and they meaned the lat/long points in the U.S. of the extreme points at (n)Barrow, (w)Attu, (s)Hawaii and (e)Maine, I would not have a problem with their answer even though it would be apparently wrong.

The center of the Universe is dynamic; subject to the ebb and flow over the vast and ever expansiveness of it all.

Spoiler
If the big Bang theory is true; then the center of the Universe is some where near the center of the explosion; some 6+ billion years ago....

Sorry if I somehow burst your bubble; you too James....:snarky: B-)

Well....if you're including Alaska.....180å¡ longitude runs through Semisopochnoi Island in the Aleutian Islands. The longitude is the dividing line between what is considered the east and west hemispheres. So Semisopochnoi Island has both http://www.cntraveler.com/stories/2012-07-30/semisopochnoi-island-alaska-maphead-ken-jennings&apos ;">eastmost and westmost point of the united states. the longitude is the dividing line between what is considered the east and west hemispheres. so if you go halfway between the part that is east of that line with the part that is west of that line, I am thinking you will end up @ 0å¡/360å¡ longitude.

(I thinking that isn't how it was calculated, though)
