I bought a new Sokkia Robot SX back in January when somebody backed over my Topcon 8205 robot with a van and totaled it. It worked fine for about a month, then the digital level stopped working and had to send it back to the factory for repair. Now it stopped finding the RC and the prism. It just sits there and spins around. This reminds me of that Topcon. You would think that for $24,000 you would get a piece of equipment that would last at least a year, just saying.
Wow, pricey robot, time to consider Leica or not?
We have a 2008 Sokkia SRX3 robotic.
Earlier this year it started not finding the RC-PR4. Turns out that the part mounted inside the handle that detects the RC-PR4 had gotten moisture in it (despite being vacuum sealed, etc, etc).
We sent it away and it got opened up, dried out, sealed up and then tested fine.
Also there some button press combination to reset the RC-PR4 which I can't remember off the top of my head. Might be worth finding out that and trying it.
Topcon=Sokkia
We just bought the yellow version. I hope it lasts longer than a year. But it costs half the price of the (very impressive) Leica.
I am surprised by the 1/2 the price statement. I generally see the equal Leica TS12 Package with Data Collection around 24-25k here. The Topcon and Sokkia are generally marketed in this area from 19-24k depending on the dealer.
I am hopeful that they get it fixed for you. I am a big stickler for buying based on having a good local dealer to support you. Yes, we want good equipment, yes we want it to last, but yes it is electronic and yes it will break. If any dealer tells you their stuff never breaks...walk away.
Sorry, I meant half of the new scan capable Leica.
The main reason we didn't go Leica is that we were concerned that we might be forced to go all Leica. We run Topcon and Nikon with Carlson, and it seemed that buying that robot would send us down a long, expensive path.
We might have been wrong. Would love to hear other opinions.
Believe it or not we are seeing the exact opposite happening. Both Topcon and Sokkia dealers have begun pushing the TopSurv/Magnet software at the request of the manufacturer. While they still work with Carlson You have to remember that the Topcon drivers have hardly ever changed, therefore it's hard for Carlson NOT to run them.
Leica will also push their software over anyone else's. However, they have made all of their drivers available to Carlson, which have changed a number if times over the years. Leica will run Viva, MicroSurvey or Carlson with no problem.
If you are comparing money to features, look at the Trimble S3 series. It has the pricing of the lower priced robots on the market, price range is 24K - 26K depending on 5" or 2" gun. TSC3,2 batteries, charger, 360 prism are all included in a package price. If you want a full featured robot, the S6 w/vision is a great instrument.
Who did you buy it from and what did their service/support tech say? Has anyone given you support on this? If you bought it from a local dealer I would think they would run out and check this out for you.
If you are Pat Moran, I got your email tried to reply back, but the address doesn't work. You can contact me at 919-496-6159
i recently picked up a TS12 with a CS15 for even less than that, though buying it packaged with the GS14 probably contributed to the savings.
hadn't used a robot in about 10 years (hadn't been in the field much in 10 years, for that matter), but i'm absolutely stunned at how well this thing performs relative to the last one i used (probably a 5600 or 5603).
