Hey all,

I have a couple of those total stations with the green bodies and the white sides. You know, the ones that sit in a red box and bounce around in black styrofoam all day.

As many of you have no doubt experienced, a lot of that black dye rubs off onto the instrument and stains it.

Has anyone successfully gotten rid of the stains? I'd rather not try my luck and use something that will deteriorate the plastic in any way and am hoping that someone has actually done it and achieved good (and safe) results.

Thanks guys,

Mick

Mr. Clean magic eraser does a good job on removing the schmutz that ends up on our GPS and DCs. I imagine it would work well on a TS.

Whenever I send one in for calibration or service it comes back sparkling like new.?ÿ I think they use Windex of all things.?ÿ I've never had the case leave marks on the equipment in the last 30+ years though.?ÿ Just lots of dirty hands and general railroad grime.

I do not know how they do it.?ÿ

If your instruments are getting scuffed in the box maybe you need to clean the foam inserts.?ÿ

It might be a case (pardon the pun!) of damp instruments not being taken out to dry. If they are damp then any dirt on the packing gets transferred to the instrument; if they are dry the dirt is just dust and falls off. It's always good practice to let the instrument air off anyway, even if its only been in moist air.

I've just gone and checked one of our instruments - it is amazing how much dirt was lying around inside the case - now go and check yours!

I think I'd be more concerned with this "bouncing" that you speak of.?ÿ All the instruments we have sit fairly securely and motionless within their cases.?ÿ I don't see much rubbing or discoloration at all.?ÿ

But maybe it starts to happen over time, or as Chris Mills mentions, the rode hard and put away wet method might be the cause.

chalk me up as another who has never experienced that of which you speak.?ÿ i'm pretty strict about keeping the cases closed in both the sun and the rain to keep the foam in good shape.

but, alas, when i saw the thread title i thought it was about hank thompson.?ÿ sorry, that's just a product of being from here.
